When I get my heads back from the machine shop I am going to pull them and inspect. Thanks for the info. I was wondering what they went to . I assumed they were freeze plugs but wondered why so small. Since I don't have my heads W/ me I am going off of memory but what is the big plug W/ a bolt head in the same area go to?

That is freeze plug in a sense that it goes to water area. Aftermarket block heater element is mounted into it on rear end of passenger side head.

Don't anybody kill me when you take these off and don't find a reason to have. But what I found made the removal process an important one.

Engine components should be completely dis-assembled for machine work. Over years of use, oil will turn to varnish and build a layer. When it dries, you get flakes and soot that is usually harmless. In certain areas it can have adverse effects.

ERKKA
That is what I was thinking it was but saw what looked like standard freeze plugs along side of it.

Your complete attention to detail is always impresive. I was going to pull those plugs anyway so your info gives me a good heads up.

OK, I was right - these are not what Brendan is discussing.

Its not me, honest. Todd Tremel is the one that suggested this. Now that I have these off, I sure as hell hope that I can find the right parts to put back in!

The plugs he received (Porsche part) seemed to be too tight of a fit and would start in the hole but not go in. Rather than using extreme force to install the plugs (and possibly damaging the head) he measured the diameter of the plugs and the inner diameter of the oil passage. The plugs were way too big.

A phone call to one of the big 3 comfirmed he received the wrong size plugs and he eventually received the correct ones.

Adam - do you recall the part number?

Well who ever the culprit is at least when I pull them( as I would have done anyway out of curiosity) I now have 2 people to blame when something goes wrong. Seriously I am glad to know whats on the other side of the plug before I pull it.

Well, I finished removing them all. Pretty straightforward removal. Very very dirty inside the tubes. I am glad I am redoing the cleaning job on these heads.
