Pulled the transmission this afternoon. Wow, there are so many gotchas ... cables, etc .... but the trippiest was removing the two top torque tube bolts. Drop the tranny till it lies on the shield plate, then get a couple of long extensions with a u-joint to give the bolts the impression you're coming at them in a straight line. Amazing how dirty that brand new tranny fluid already is ... Always easier the second time around eh

After pulling the cover, fluid is running down behind the converter, not on the converter, so it appears fluid is coming from inside the transmission, between the seal you see in the pic, and the shaft. There is also fluid at the bottom, at the circumference of the part that bolts on (the pump?). Can't tell if that's just running down the face from the shaft or if it's leaking there .... Thoughts?

It looks like at least your radial seal is the problem. Pull it out and closely inspect it, you will probably find a cut. The internal pump O-ring would not leave any fluid near your 3rd and 4th arrow from the top. It would only leave oil by the 5th arrow.

Thanks Davde. I have to tell you I don't relish the thought of putting this thing back in only to find something else is wrong. Any thought why it peed so freely? I'd have expected a slight leak but htis was a massive gush, as if there was no seal at all. Looking at it just now I saw no cuts ... Am I missing something? Is there much pressure just behind that seal? It rides on the converter shaft part, right?

Well, after you get this all back together, you can always name this the Pee-Car That is if you haven't already named it something else

dude i don't deal well with things I don't understand, and frankly replacing some seals on something without knowing definitely what the issue is, or how much pressure each one needs to hold, doesn't make me happy

OK the pressure can reach as much as 200 lbs normally more like 150-175 . The seal is supposed to sit forward of a drain back hole if the seal is pushed in too far that blocks the return hole ......this is from our transmission rebuilder I have no idea how or why automatic transmissions work If it is not a stick shift I do not want to drive it !!!

Thank you Jim ... I agree. I have a spare tranny and am sorely tempted to just replace the entire POS.

Found the problem. The paper seal that sits behind the bolts you see in my photo, was pushed up and wasn't sealing ... it was distorted. In the little chamber it seals off, is a fluid passage .. that is why it was peeing.

That seal looks worn. Remove it and take a good look at the converter hub Bronze bushing, like any deep gauging, also look at the converter Hub for any marks. Can you Post a picture of the torque converter hub.

The seal is installed correctly, flush with the pump; the purpose of the Drain back hole is to exhaust fluid from behind the seal, if blocked pressure built up would blow the seal out of the pump. This was a counmon problem in the 80s with 2004R transmission; the tech fix was and still done today is:

Front pump
A few modifications in this area. First drill the front seal area drain hole (angled passage viewed from the front of the pump with the seal removed) to a 1/4". Drill the intersecting passage and mating passage in rear pump half to 5/16". This will help front seal drain back to the pan and will keep from blowing the front seal out.
