Smile Rear window defrosters... replace ?

One of the POs had the windows tinted on the car. The quarter windows are perfect, but I would like to take off the tint on the side and back windows.

Get this... whoever did the tinting did not clean the rear window. It has the residue from what might be the dealer sticker on it and it is embedded underneath the tint !

I have read the previous posts about taking the tint off and being careful not to damage the defroster wires in the process. What I would like to know is, has anyone ever had to replace these and how much was this ? Just in case I get very frustrated and razor blade the entire window...

Spend a few bucks and have it done by a professional.

Randy,

That's actually what I was thinking, especially for the rear window. I know that I can do the side ones, so I can save money there. With the black headliner and black dash, it's like a cave in there at night.

Robert,

Things you will need: Black trash bags - Simple Green - Old sheet for covering inside of car and top of rear fenders - cello pad(a sponge with with plastic mesh cover)- sharp razor scraper

Take a black trash bag (may need 2 to cover the inside of the back window) Pull your car outside in direct sunlight. Open your hatch and then cover the interior and fenders using the cloth. Now saturate the inside of the glass with SG and then stick the garbage bag to the inside of glass. Leave it out in the sun for at least an hour and when you remove the bags from the inside some of the tint will come off with the bag. Use the scrub pad to remove the rest. I have tinted cars for many years and this is how we remove tint without damaging the defroster. Try this link www.tintdude.com for a more in depth explanation. His materials vary somewhat but the process is the same - basically "osmosis"

Be patient and good luck!

Robert, I have only my rear window tinted. At first I was not sure I liked it but now I could not live without it. It blocks all those annoying head lights at night and is not noticeable during the day other than keeping the heat out.

Jerry,

I really would not mind it too much if the person who did it cleaned the window before he installed the tint. I can't believe it, there are remnants of the dealer sticker adhesive on both sides of the window. Oh well, right not that's only something small for me to think about.

Today, I had the day off and took the car in to get my new Kumho 712's installed. One of the lug nuts broke on the rear wheel and one broke on the front wheel. We thought that it might have been a fluke with the rear wheel and then the first one on the front also broke. I am bringing it to the local dealership to see if they can get the rest off and get the two broken ones off. The ones on the car are (I think) magnesium, very light. I want to have them all replaced with some stronger stock lug nuts.

Hello, my name is Rob... and I love 928s !

The stock lug nuts are very light alloy, so the ones that broke were almost undoubtably stock. Steel lug nuts are available, but don't look as nice. Make sure the ends are conical to fit the depressions in the wheel. Then make sure the ones you put on are properly (92-94 lb-ft) torqued and regularly checked.

Tom,

OK, so those might be stock ? Great theft deterant. I hope that they can get those off. I have never experienced this before. I guess this gets me prepped for being a 928 owner !

Robert, this usually occurs when the wheels are installed by a gorilla with an air gun!

The lug nuts MUST be installed using a manual torque wrench.

Interesting - The hex extends all the way down the threaded portion of the lug nut. If your guy was using a properly-fitting wrench that went all the way down to the wheel surface, how could he break a lug nut?

Sounds like a short (improper) wrench to me.

On the ones that are installed on my car, the hex portion only goes about 80% of the length of the nut. After that it flares a bit and is then rounded. Probably not stock, I guess.

That sounds like stock lug nuts - but that still only leaves about an eighth of an inch of threads past the hex.

To get these off, you might want to try:
Get a socket that fits the hex very well, and that goes full depth, so that the socket bottoms on the flange at the bottom.
Place the socket on a lug, and hit the socket hard with a hammer, as squarely as possible.
Unscrew the lug.
