Earl Gillstrom in Glen Mills, PA (and I, as partner in this tool) has the setup. He'll do the timing for a reasonable fee, but it's not available for loan. He is unavailable for about 2 weeks.

Earl is a retired guy who will work on your car for a very reasonable rate. Every feedback from folks who have visited him has been stellar. You can do your work under his supervision, work with him if you want to help-and-learn, or do a watch-and-learn session with him. He's meticulous, to say the least. Take a look at his $50 GT and you'll get the idea. Plan on getting your wheel alignment done while you are there. Better than a commercial alignment, and will pay you back in extended tire life immediately. You won't meet a nicer guy.

I've never been so thrilled to work on a machine...I don't want to pay someone else...It's my play time! Nobody in our region has a porken timing rig? I can have my covers off in 25 minutes, and be done the whole deal in 2 hours...tops.
Need someone to come to the rescue!
Thing is, I have a flat spot between 3000 and 4000 rpm, and it was much more dramatic when I had set the cams all the way advance. Now that I have them in the middle near the wear marks...and it runs much better, but still a flat spot. Before I go chasing every freaking thing on the board, I want to make sure the cams are as close to sync as possible.
My plug wires are old and crusty (have another set in better shape) but I didn't see any blue sparks in the dark even with water mist technique, My maf is suspect (I have another known to be fine- I will test this weekend), I have 2 spare coils known to pull hard- also will try this weekend.... I will make another post on monday about this issue if none of these items clear things up...
The symptom is- full pull to 3000, then a slight lag to 4000, then pulls hard to redline with just a slight hint of occasional hesitation (almost impossible to detect, but I know what full on juice is supposed to be, so I can sniff it)....If I bang gears and keep it in the hot zone, it runs like a race car....Time after time, I can punish the **** out of it.
New fuel filter, oil chnge, air filer, wp, tb, front seals, and new bosch platinums..... within last 150 miles. I checked the octane loops, they are not connected...I unplugged the TPS, it made a change in idle so I assume it's ok. I have not changed any o2 sensor....does anyone suggest that I replace them [are there 2?] I noticed when I took out the spark plugs that were in the car when I got it that they looked very lean to me... After reading the posts on these matters, I presume the MAF is going to straighten me right out....I'll make a post as soon as I swap it out with the other one. Man, it really helps to have 2 of the same model year... without it I can't imagine chasing down gremlins on a tight budget like mine!
