Default Turbo II wheels painted black?

I bought a set of the 18x10 wheels in this thread https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/405626-cheap-996-turbo-wheels-at-discount-51-a.html
I'm considering painting them black before having tires mounted. Does anybody have pictures of Turbo IIs painted black? On a 928?

If I decide to do it, is there a good way to strip the new original paint? Any tricks to making the paint last? Beerburner and others have warned me that home painted wheels chip easily. If needed, I can powder coat them.

There are some pics of my car with black wheels in my stroker crank thread, but they are turbo twists.

I guess Erik will be painting his.

How to get the factory paint off? Chemicals? I'd rather not pay to have them blasted.

You don't need to strip them.... just scuff them.

Sorry, I thought these were twist II's but they're not, but close.

That's the thread H-P's comment came from.

I like the look. As a bonus, the black will hide brake dust and other track gunk.

Thinking about it.

I do not like the idea of powdercoating wheels. For reasons about the heat doing damage to the wheel and the coating hiding cracks. IMO not worth the risk. Not to mention getting the coating back off is a royal PIA versus paint in case I change my mind down the road.

There was a very good thread on this in the racing forum. I cannot find it.

Painting would be much easier and I did have the same concerns about powder coating. I didn't find a PC vs paint thread in the racing forum either.

obviously if you are looking to do a half assed job and may want to change colors down the road painting would be the first choice. the paint chipping easier than powder coating is an issue. seems as if every post here must be qualified with a personal experience so i'll lend this: having spent the better part of 8 years an US Navy Structural Mechanic working specifically in the Paint Finish and Insignia discipline i know that unless you can completely strip to bare metal, etch the metal chemically and then prime with a solid durable primer you'll just be red-neckin' it. now as a Mechanical Engineer i can understand the concern of "hiding cracks" so that said i have no experience finding cracks in powder coated pieces. i have roughly 3 thousand dollars worth of powder coating on my lifted truck so i guess my drive shafts, axles, track bars, springs, and brackets could in fact be cracked. with another 5k or so in powder coating on my previous pantera and ferrari 308 and 328 i never discovered cracks on any powder coated items or wheels. maybe i should be looking closer at the powder coating.

good luck in whatever you decide and remember your finish will only be as good as your preparation of the surface.

Good info Daymon.

As for my experience with painting, I have zero. My friend who wins pretty much every concous he enters a car into will be painting my wheels. If they chip, I'll touch them up.

thanks, i guess i was thinking of the more permanent solution and less "touch up".. but now the powder coating hiding cracks has got me doing some research. on non moving eye candy parts cracks won't be an issue but on wheels and steering components that is something worth being concerned about.

i changed my mind !!!!! PAINT 'EM.......... and touch up as needed.....

Those wheels may already be powdercoated. Check with the manufacturers first.
I think I talked to them last year, and told them how a 9" et65 would sell to some of us like hotcakes. I think it's the same company, and they said their wheels were powdercoated.

Paint it is. I wasn't going to coat the inside of the wheel either way, so I'd still have some visibility for cracks in the rim.
