Red and orange LED arrays would be simple to engineer in horizontal lines with a diffused cover; the whole deal could replace the stock lamp holders and fit in the existing opening; it would look so... 22nd century.
The array could be optionally wired to say 'Back' 'Off' (or your choice of four letter words)
How about incorporating a horizontal rear brake cooling suction outlet there too?

Does someone have a set of early style broken tail lights they could donate to science? Or at least sell real cheap? I have been talking to an engineering friend of mine and we could probably prototype one fairly quickly. Email me off forum if you can help.

The sleekness of the 928's lines are preserved in the concept created by Quaz. The ricerboy/tuner look on the 928 takes away from it bigtime - not quite looking as "homemade" as the chrome versions though. Nonetheless, clear and red should be the only two lense colors on this new piece as it will indeed look updated a la Porsche.
For under $300, count me in.

I think the proposed designs are quite respectfull with the rest of the car and preserve the lines.
Besides that, bcdavis´s one matches round at tail with round at front (headligths) beautifully. It does not look like a cheap "rice" design!
Quaz´s one is a beautifull adaptation of the S4 design for the previous models...very respectfull with Porsche´s own designs. What´s wrong with that???
I still would like to see some designs for the S4.
PorKen & 944play´s suggestion of using LEDs are making me salivate... :-)

Note the the long horizontal lines of the S4 lense add to the wideness of the rear.
BMW did this for the Z8. I am surprised Jacquemond went circular for his "wide" kits.

Now that I have a little more time to work in Pshop I did a better image.

If someone would be so kind as to post that to the list directly I would appreciate it.
Chucker, email me at kkwas@wi.rr.com tonight and hopefully we can work something out.
Anybody else have any experience with a project like this?

Rick, here is a quicky of the tail light closer to flush. Personally I like the smaller look because I think the lights just get too big if you flush them. However, they don't look too bad.

The big version (Quaz v3) kinda grows on you.
Have the upper be frosted light grey concealing orange LEDs, the lower, red reflective, with red LEDs.
Reverse lights in place of the tow eye hole covers...

I pick number 2 or 3 from the first post, there are many good ideas here though. I think an almost flush cover with a few lined through it would look great especially if it had abit of thickness to it, and maybe not completely flush!?
The bottom line...the S4's don't need help, the early cars could use a subtle touch in my opinion.

I like the smaller of the two. I really mean that. And one other question: Will all of the red lense respond, or just a portion of it when I use the turn signal. I hate to "Nervous Nanny" on everyone, but I want two brake lights all of the time while turning and braking (Michigan drivers). Remember the "early" cars do not have the 3rd tail light. We have two Volvos and they have the orange to let people know that there is just not braking but plans on turning. <img border="0" alt="[typing]" title="" src="graemlins/yltype.gif" />
