Post Things to check

This will be a series of minor items to check on your 928 ....

Under the hood, find the headlight motor between the radiator/condensor and the front bumper cover, then locate the actuating link that runs from the bellcrank on the motor/gearbox to the rod that lifts the headlights.

There MUST be a small round clip holding the flat link onto the round pins on each of the pins.

If one of these pins is missing, the link can slip off, resulting in you headlights flopping to the down position, which could be pretty exciting at 75 mph!

If the top clip is missing, the link can slip off while the lights are in the down position. Then, when you turn the lights on, the motor can drive the loose link right thru the A/C condensor and the radiator. Ouch!

Clips should be available locally - just be sure to get a metric size. Since we sell them by Porsche part number, I'm not certain of the size, but I think that it is a 6 mm.

Great stuff guys.

Perhaps you can repost this into the thread "Attention New 928 Owners", to add to the body of knowledge there.

While some topics may not be specific to new owners, feel free to use that thread to add stuff of general interest as well.

Thanks.

Things to check II ....

Look on the inner panel of the right front fender, and find the "jump start terminal".

There should be a black plastic shield that covers a complex of electrical wires, held on by a screw-on plastic cap that covers the jump start terminal.

If the terminal cap is missing, you have a constantly hot 12 vdc terminal, connected directly to the battery positive by large cables, that is exposed to potentially disasterous short circuits. How, for example, would you like to have your metal watch band melted off of your arm?

If the black plastic shield is missing, rain and wash water will run down the fender seam and directly into the mass of electrical wires, causing massive corrosion problems.

The shield and terminal cap are cheap, and are both necessary to your 928's wellbeing.

Where could we procure such a cap Wally?

BTW - I can't relocate topics to another thread (re. my previous suggestion) - only to another forum.

Best way, of course is always to call Jeannie at (828) 766-9280 - but I might be biased!

Next best way is to call one of the other 928 vendors - even if they aren't RennList sponsors, they need some occasional business.

Or, you could get it at a Porsche dealer - might cost more there, though.

928.612.871.02 Remote start cover - less than $4.
928.612.867.00 Backing plate - about $5.50
928.612.869.00 Push-on cap - about $5.
928.612.073.00 Screw on cap - about $5.

If your car is missing the cover, it might be a good idea to disassemble and clean all of the connections that have been exposed. Disconnect the battery first!

As a side note - if you buy from any of the vendors, there will be a minimum shipping charge. It is usually a good idea to try to order enough to get the shipping weight/size up to the minimum, so you don't pay as much for shipping as for the parts. Most owners don't have much trouble thinking of some other small parts that they need - hood/hatch shocks, light bar clips, armrest *****, etc., etc.

I will add these posts to the "new owner" post - I just wanted to have them separate for the first posting, to make sure that everyone will see them.

Hey, thanks Wally, I think you might have just explained a few minor electrical gremlins I've been having. Gremlins meaning the little thing that keeps hitting the 1000 lb. bombs with a mallet.

Tony, what is #13 in the diagram? I'm probably spacing out here, but I don't remember that on my '89 S4 (so why don't you go out in the garage and look you numbskull??).

Wally, have you installed one of the analog clocks in an earlier S4? I got one from Jeannie, but I've been too lazy to tear into the console. BTW, got a jumper terminal cover from her at the same time. Can't believe I was driving around without it considering the electrical po$$ibilitie$.
