Question Flamethrower?

I have searched the Rennlist and have yet to figure something out. It may be obvious to some of you more seasoned Shark experts, but… What the heck is that threaded hole above my rear license plate? Trailer hitch? Flamethrower? Or possible enclosure for a backup camera? I can’t figure it out; I have had my 87S4 for 2 years and just barely noticed it, so if anyone knows what it is feel free to enlighten me.

If you look inside the grile at the front, you will find a round black plug that covers the matching hole in the front.

Bet you can't get it out.

I was able to get my front plug out - only to find sand/gunk inside.

Cleaned it all out - but the tow hook won't thread in very far.

Took the plug to my local machine shop in hopes I could get a thread chasing device made - my buddy scatched his head - never had seen a thread like the one on the Tow Hook.

It's a metric thread of some sort I think...

Jay,

I have had good success on plugged threads by using a dental pick or small 90 degree pick and following the threads.

I took my front tow eye plug out a couple of years ago. After spending the better part of a day heating, hammering, and spraying WD-40, I drilled into it and it came out with a screw extractor. Notice that I didn't say it came out easily with the screw extractor either.

I talked to another local 928 owner the other day, and he wasn't able to get his out even after drilling and trying a screw extractor. He's got the hole drilled so big already that there's not much left of the original plug except for the threads, and the remaining part still won't come out. He found a source for the correct metric tap, thinking that he could just use that to clean the remains of the plug out. Then he found out that the tap would cost $80.
