Post Headlight update question

I have a question regarding the headlights on my '87 928 S4... Does the car come standard with a NON-Sealed beam unit??? I haven't really checked yet but can you just replace the bulbs on the car??? If so does anyone know if H5s will work? or PIAA H4 superwhites? anyone tried this?

The US S4 model uses H5/9004 replaceable bulbs. There are various hi-wattage replacements available, as well as the 'superwhite' and no-name 'xenon' type bulbs.

Buy good bulbs. Many of the cheapo "hi output" bulbs are less than precision, and do more to dazzle the oncoming driver than light up the road ahead. Too many drivers mistake this look with better performance, and only abuse the rest of us in their quest to show off their lack of consideration.

I actually replaced my bulbs with those plasma lights you always see on ebay for sale. But I got the 80/100w and I think most of those for sale are lower wattage.

They seem to have a cleaner whiter light and I think I get a little more illumination - only $10 so it was worth the try.

Hmmm. Speculating that light energy as actually plasma... I seem to remember from somewhere in my past that plasma is all the components of an atom, but with the electrons stripped off. The 'gas plasma' bulbs would somehow have a permeable glass envelope that allowed this 'plasma' to escape, carrying the sub-atomic firefly dust strapped on their backs like tiny quark-mules.

So much for truth-in-advertizing, eh? Oh, wait a minute, was that blue plasma?

I have a pair of 80/100 plain old halogen electric light bulbs, one in each headlight housing, and they are definitely brighter and better than the original 45/55 or 55/55 bulbs sold over the counter. My take on most of the 'blue-white' bulbs is that they filter out the red part that is inherent to tungsten light. It may look whiter, but is't quite as bright as a clear-envelope bulb. The ultimate test is whether you can see your headlight output as it reflects off of stuff in your path.
