Default Why wont my automatic transmission shift up properly?

Hi all,
For some reason, my auto tranny wont shift up normally all of a sudden. I have to get to a high rev before it shifts from 2nd to 3rd, and 3rd to 4th.
This is happening about 20% of the time I drive the car.

Ive checked the Tranny oil level, and it is normal.
Could it be the tranny oil pump? If it is, how involved could fixing this be?

Worried, but hopeful. Any advice on how to diagnose this, and the potential problems, would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I have noticed when the weather is colder...that my tranny will hold a shift longer also....don't think its a big deal....I could be wrong...but I believe it does this to warm up quicker.....my Acura shifts later in the RPM's when its cold for this reason....

Its probably just as you've said. Regardless; make sure that you have checked the oil level, with the car idling and at operating temperature. There is a huge difference in reservoir readings between cold, cold-idling, and warm-idling. Sorry for stating what may have been obvious to you. Good luck with the problem.

Might be due to cold temperatures, but it could be you are getting the "2-3 flare" shift issue, which is a simple fix, replacing a spring in the valve body. I had this issue and took the car to Steve Cattanneo, he replaced the spring and we did a service, eliminated it completely.

I am starting to get the flare on the 3-4 shift. I stopped by Steve's shop and he said that if I am getting that, that it is time for a rebuild, my tranny has 161K miles on it.

Here is link to thread and repair:

Good luck, Glen

This is probably the best reason I can think of to move to PA.

Bill, it is convenient, he is only about a 1 1/2 hour ride, I typically pass his shop every couple of weeks when on business trip.

He is getting my car in a couple of weeks for a rebuild of the tranny, install a LSD and 2.54 gears. He is going to change the stall speed on the converter while he has it apart to get a better launch. Might as well replace the torque tube too....

But that may be the only reason to be living in PA....it is damn cold right now, not quite like Green Bay though......

Reason #2: Local cops don't have radar/lidar/vascar
