I strongly dislike the laws that define a particular possible distraction as illegal. Some people can drive using a cell phone, some people can not.
Ron responds: Agreed. Some people can't walk and chew gum (pardon the trite expression).
If the system's primary function were to provide safety, then the focus would be on poor driving even thought it is subjective. Of course we could have more stringent driving requirements, but then a significant percentage of the population would be without transportation.
Ron responds: Wow ! Far out !! Where do I sign up for that policy?? Happy days for sure. Clear air in front and back and a tankful of gas! Sounds like fun to me.
After all, if we found we needed them and their rules less, how would they derive their power? No, I don't believe in a conspiracy, just that people who crave power will migrate towards opportunities to wield power. Political power is their nirvana.
Ron responds: And sooooo many sheeple want and need rules and regs to function. The power is ours, and if we want to change things, we can and will. Some people will remember how this country turned around and stopped the Vietnam war. I'm not passing judgement on the adviseability of that course of action, only that it was possible and happened.
I guess I a bit cynical

Ron,
Seems like people just don't believe the money making scheme of traffic courts, sigh.
I have seen $10K-30K a day racked in courts here in California and there are FOUR (4) courts in my county alone. Doing the numbers is easy.
Cheers,
Andre

It keeps a lot of people employed... for not creating any value whatsoever. Just siphoning off money from otherwise law abiding citizens.
It's a worldwide scheme, unfortunately.

If I was still in high school, I would argue. But I'm not in high school, and I say we need to make it much more DIFFICULT to get a license, with intensive training and driver ed that doesn't fill everyone's head with garbage that they keep all their lives. To grant someone a license with minimum education and expect them to perform properly is absurd, and almost makes me think the insurance companies condone such insults to our intelligence. Of course they would never be complicit in such schemes, would they? Naw. Must be some other reason for such death and accident rates in the US. (yeah, sure).

yep. that's a good enough reason to keep an old car around, no logs to audit but they are tracking cell phones on the east coast already. they are claiming it's just for traffic analysis, but that's how it always starts....

Ok, so what? The state makes some money off of people getting caught making mistakes. How would you go about punishing violators?
I mean it’s not like speeding is the same as holding up the corner 7/11 – but there should be some consequences for breaking the law and it seems to me that a fine makes a heck of a lot more sense than throwing someone in jail for getting speeding or forgetting to use their turn signal when making a turn.
We fine people for violating safety & public nuisance laws – from simple things like J-walking all the way up to more serious offences like panhandling or being intoxicated in public. So why not fines moving violations?
Look I’ve gotten my fair share of tickets in my day (most minor and a couple of biggies), but come on folks we’re all adults here – right? So doesn’t all this whining sound kind of undignified.

someone has been drinking the cool-aid too long... as long as nobody gets hurt, and the vehicle is being driven responsibly, who cares what the speed is? sure 110 in a school zone w/kids around is not cool, but 110 on an open dry freeway and if you are the only car, it's in good shape and the driver is in good shape/alert/paying attention, who should really care? no harm, no foul IMO.
clearly, the traffic laws really don't take into account the possible circumstances, and just "throw a blanket" over an arbritary speed or move and claims anything else is bad. what if the red lite is broken, and there are no cars around? can you run it? the rules say no enough for a cop to give you a ticket even if you've been waiting for it to change for 2 days, if he feels like it.
I say BS, but am smart enough to know getting caught is gonna cost. if a referendum ever comes around to change that stuff, I'll vote on it in a heartbeat though. till then, sure I'll play along, but I can smell BS like that almost as far as my X50 and V1 can.

Two different issues ladies.
If you don't like the law that says doing 45mph (based on a 65mph zone) over is wrong? Quit whining about it & change it. But please relinquish this whiny argument about how fines are revenue.
While some municipalities or local governments might be guilty of lowering the speed limits and raising the fines to fill their coffers, I think there is a bit more to it than that. But again that’s not my argument. I’m just tired of the whining about how the fines are some method of taxation without representation and are only done for the propose of simply raising revenue.
That said & having played – won & lost the game myself, I would tend to agree that most of us (here in p-car world anyway), are probably more than capable of driving our vehicles at speed. But a number of factors come into play as each of us has our own “limits”. Either by their al skill level & reaction time and/or are limited by the vehicle in question. Toss into the mix that there are going to be other people on the road either entering or exiting those highways traveling at or near the posted speed limit – I seriously don’t see anybody ever raising speed limits to mandate that we all have to drive at our maximum capability.
