Oil pickup, new vs old ???

Let me start by saying that I know **** about what constitutes a good oil pickup design or a bad one.
However, having dropped the oil pan on my '79 I am facing a decision whether to move to the new '83 style pickup or stay with the original design. I believe there is a general opinion that the new pickup is a "better" design and many OB owners have made the swap.
The more I look and think about the two designs I am wondering more and more if the design change wasn't done to save money rather than improve performance. I can't help but think that the original pan/baffle/screen/funnel design was a lot better at controlling oil from sloshing around and ensuring adequate oil level in the sump. I am aware of the concerns about the fine wire mesh perhaps restricting oil from getting back into the sump but I honestly don't buy that. Providing the screen is clean and oil is hot, there should be no problem with oil getting into the sump area.
Can I spark a little debate about the pros & cons of each design to help me make up my mind. Thanks guys !

One of the problems with the rubber on is that it can, technically, come apart. It can move, and deform. I think all modern pickups are steel or some metal. No rubber.

Without a screen, the old one will allow very large items to be sucked up into the oil pump. Speaking from personal experience.
I cannot think of any dissadvantage to the new one.
