FWIW Todd's transmission has over 100,000 miles on it, no rebuild and has been a daily driver for Todd going on four years now. He even drives it in the extreme cold, clear roads permitting.

Sometimes I wonder if Todd is your imaginary friend.

Then I realize you've never made it to SITM and I've never met you, so I wonder if you're my imaginary friend.

So he is has the Kibort luck. He needs to get rid of the 225 tires on the rear so he can break something

You know Mark's car is stock....

He is running 255 or 265 drag radials, and they're pretty sticky.

Since im never dropping the clutch from a standstill, with my "Stock, with a set of headers" 928, even with the 12" wide tires in the rear, the forces are probably a lot less on the transmission.

With the Tranny and half shafts in pieces, you might have trouble finding that 1200 hp breaking point of the TT.

As Roger would say, Todd hasn't broken the transmission because his car has the vastly superior automatic transmission in it, not a manual.

Matt - Todd Exists. I have been in his shop, and in his red 928 with 8 speeds. We went past a WHP just after the speedometer got to 165.
He is the most open, honest, and down to earth car guy I have met in my life, other, than say, Louie and Porken up there where its cold AND it rains.

On the OP question of what the 77 drivetrain will take, I have a 78 TT and a 78 trans that I rebuilt with an LSD, attached to 78 Half shafts (which are solid steel by the way). The engine will be close to these numbers, or over if I can make the E85 work, so I'll let you know if it survives the innitial dyno runs, and street driving. That should be this year if it all goes pretty well.

If it breaks, I don't know, maybe I will have to rethink what to put in there - the rest of the car is pretty strong with some massaging. BUt people have blown up all years of the 928 trans.

Once your first link has broken, how will you determine what the rest of the chain can take?

Hi

As usual with any race mechanic...... RACE IT, BREAK IT ,FIX IT, REPEAT lol

In other words, once the first link breaks, then beef it up to make it stronger then try again etc....

All the best Brett

Well thanks for the info!
My plans are to go for approx. 500 hp and 500 ft. lbs. tq. "give or take".
This is a street machine.
I think with that amount of power the car will keep me happy for many years to come.
The only thing is I did not want to do this and worry every time I opened her up that somethings going to fail.

Default "controller"

Nice discussion,

I was wondering , Brett, what the "contorller" is that allows you to limit the torque\ hp on the drive train incrementally? Or did you mean you will build in stages and see what fails with a known dynoed engine configuration.
Great thread by the way!!!!

Hey Ray,

500 and 500 - good numbers, a goal, you'll be happy for a while, and then......

its not if it will break, its when........
