Default Spare wheel cover foam thickness?

Hi all, happy new year for 2008!

On my '89 the corrugated plastic spare wheel cover is OK but the foam is compressed and torn in places. Do any of you have an idea of how thick the foam was originally, and whether it was fairly rigid or very soft?

Thanks all..

Mine is 3/4" thick. Medium grey colored foam, medium stiff, with black facing on the side away from the plastic cover. This is on my cosmetics list for replacement. There are several local faom suppliers, but one would actually need to call or visit them to get a product to appear I guess. Hasn't happened yet, but may someday when I'm out and about. If you find 'the right stuff' please share your sources. I suspect that there are more than a few who ned the replacement.

Thanks Bob. My Wife has some stuff that sounds right without the black facing. I'll ask her, she's the expert.

I used some half-inch thick black insulating foam I procured from a local AC supplier. I cost about $15 dollars and I used 3m adhesive to install. That bought enough material to actually do two of the covers. I have enough left over to do another if anyone wants it.

Use the foam on the right side to compare.

There's supposed to be foam on the other side? Oh... that's what that black flaky stuff was that I vacuumed out years ago

Maybe I'll use the 1" foam I have around..

Starting around 89-90 MY Porsche went to a thicker longer lasting foam than the thin stuff used before that degrades over time and really makes a MESS......the molded nearly an inch thick foam thats only as big as the tire cover is the better design...not the huge thin foam that falls apart when you touch it and hangs over the size of the cover...... I'll give ya three guesses which one I have...heres some before and afters

Hey Brian, I see that your spare wheel is color-matched to the paint in the boot. Nice!

Brian
Great paintjob, but where's the foam in your pics? I have a panel of stiff open-cell about 15mm thick on the right side over the fuel tank. But on the left over the spare wheel I have only the transparent plastic cover with a thin layer of flexible "foam rubber" glued on its underside.

The plastic cover is broken and the foam has become icky-sticky (and as you say it makes a dreadful mess). This is the first item on my '08 to-do list. Should there be a piece of the rigid stuff on the left side too? Doesn't look like there's space for it in my car.

Dr Bob! "the paint in the BOOT"?? You been hanging out with too many Brits?

I'm getting ready to cut one out of 1/4-3/8 " plywood and get rid of the junk piece of plastic. My spare tire and rim is missing so there is no support for the plastic cover. Jason

How many is/are "too many"??

What is a better way to describe that area? It's not a trunk. Maybe "luggage area"?

I helped finance school working part time on "interesting" cars. Mostly better British and Italian cars. No Fiats, a few Alfas and F-cars, mostly Lotus and Jaguar, some A-H, only a few MG and Triumph. Did a few TD and TF restos but made no money on those projects. Too picky I guess. Jaguars became the core business as soon as word got around that I was fast and fair, but still maintained a Lotus following. Jaguars definitely came with a boot.

I have all sorts of weird rubber pieces I don't seen in any of these pics either, but what's also intriguing... what is in that box inside the spare tire?

Just teasing Bob. I'm a expatriate Welshman myself. Now you mention it I don't even know for sure what I call that area either. I think I usually just say "in the back" but boot would be OK in my neck of the woods too.

LC Milstein. That's not a box. It's just a cover over some electrical connectors.

Ah, the box inside the tyre. Sorry. Spare wheel air compressor.

From the factory, my car shipped with the air compressor shown, plus another dealer-supplied high-capacity pump. Has a PCNA part number on it. Made in Canada labels on the inside. Almost-white plastic case for it.

There are also a few critical accessory belts, alternator and AC it looks like. A plastic bag holds gloves and a larger plastic bag for the road wheel in case it needs to be carried in the... boot. I've carefully preserved all those pieces out of the car, and replaced them with commonly-available store bits. A few pairs of better gloves, a few large trash bags, a Tyvek jumpsuit, and the last set of belts that came off the car. I added an emergency tire repair kit after getting a puncture a week ago. Don't want to get the never-been-used mini-spare dusty, or risk the paint in the lug wells of that wheel. I carry a common Wal-Mart special mini air compressor in place of the precious factory piece.

I also carry a mini tool kit of screwdrivers and sockets, in addition to the tools in the rear panel. There's a set of 10ga jumper cables made with battery-charger clamps and some surplus Monster Cable. I'm going to add another mini kit with allens/torx/nutdrivers when I get a chance, in response to a fellow owner's need at a recent gathering.
