Default 82 Track Car progress (more updates/pics)

Finally had some time to dig into my recently acquired 82 Track car. I took some time over the Turkey day break to borrow a friends diesel pickup (thanks Thurston) and Ken Osage's trailer (thanks Ken) and head down to San Francisco to meet up with Dan Brindle and pick up the the 82. I also picked up a couple of motorcycles on the trip (04 Ducati 998 matrix Edition and a 91 BMW R100 GS Paris Dakar). For some reason they were all on the way down

Anyway after spending some time getting to know my bikes, I figured I better get cracking on the track car. For those that don't remember, it is a 1982 Black 928 that had GTS rear quarters put on at some point. It also had a 91 S4 motor installed. I would have driven the car back but according to Dan it had a power steering leak and would loose fluid as fast as it was put it.

I finally had a chance to look into it and it appears the pressure side line off of the pump has been "repaired" and it is leaking from there (lots of oily mess on front and down under the engine). I'll order that hose and get that taken care of.

Once I get that done I can get it up in the air on the lift at our shop and assess the exhaust system ...It still has the S4 manifolds, but it mates to a crappy "Y" pipe and into what appears to be a stock 82 cat/2.5 inch single pipe/resonator/rear muffler. I'll be putting a "X" pipe on there into dual gt resonators and out the back for now.

The GTS flares are nicely done. With my spare set of CS rims on there (9 x 16 with 245 hoosiers) I still have like 3 inches to spare on each side

Overall the car looks pretty good with some paint issues mainly on the front of the car. The interior is missing for the most part..gonna rip out the dash and console and seats..(have Recaro SRD's on their way here). Will also be getting a roll cage put in once Ken has his done on his car .

The S4 motor conversion appears to be pretty clean. Nothing too hacked up about it and everything appears to be in the right spot. It fires up easily and idles smoothly. Once I get the exhaust sorted I'll put it on the dyno just to get some baseline numbers. Then I'll put her on the scale to see what it weighs. Then with the guidance of Ken O and Chuck Briggs, I'll rip out everything that is "unnecessary")

The clutch is a dual disk and feels good as far as I have tested it and the tranny is the original 82 5sp..but as far as codes go it doesn't have LSD...

That's it for now, I'll post up pics when I get a chance and update as I progress in to tearing into the car.

Later,
Tom

I'll get some new pictures tomorrow when it's light out. It is still odd to lift the hood of the 82 and see a shiny S4 motor in there when one expects to see a spider .

here are some older pics when I first got it.

Tom

ditch everything from it that isnt strictly necessary for it to run! seriously, i found it hard removing weight from my car at first because i was thinking in terms of restoration more than was helpful. if you get cup mirrors dont put the electric motors in them, things like that.. in fact just get some cheap small carbon mirrors and get some 86.5 cams modified for the S4 lump - when youve sorted the rest out - looks like a good base for a track car.

that is so cool. Funny this was the car we were looking at up in in Cal. I was tempted! got to love the rear quarters!
Now, the key thing is trying to find a way to get the 305s up front without doing a chop job! (got to find secret sauce for how anderson and fan did theirs. )

when will it be track ready????

Plans right now are to get the interior ripped out, cage in, motor in good state of tune (maybe belt, water pump etc), exhaust system redone, S4 suspension upgrade, and then hit the track in Portland for racing licensing in April. After that I'll likely be running at local track days and SCCA events that are close to home. After that, who knows....

It's gonna be a blast

so you will be hanging out with the other 2 928 racers up there?
That means you will probably end up at T-hill sometime in the near future!
maybe by next summer, Anderson will have a good transmission, Fan will have found his electrical gremlin, and we might have 6 928 races in the SCCA ITE Race!

Yep..that's the plan. Both Chuck and Ken will guide me..as well as John Davis who is also building up his 83 track car..so if everything falls into place we could have 4 928's coming down from the PacNW... .

More updates..and pics...
Finally got the power steering sorted. Put on the pump I got from Ken,
got the new line on there, fixed a mis-bolted Alternator and filled it
up with ATF. Took about a quart and now I have power steering with no
leaks so far.

The car did get it's share of me though...while reaching in from the
top to adjust a connection, the wrench slipped off..and I scraped the
back of my forearm along the sharp edge of the fender at the fender
bolt area. Looked down and saw skin on the fender edge and
thought..better give it a break before I beat the car with a
pipe..haha. Looks like some serious road rash now..ouch!!!

Now I'll concentrate on the interior stripping and the cage. At this
point I can actually drive the car..so it'll be at the shop on the
lift to get a new exhaust too..and then then S4 suspension/brakes
..dang..lots still to do ..

Pics below include S4 motor in old body style 928, fan setup, ratty interior, GTS flares..those are 9x16 CS rims with 245 hoosiers on there..lots of room, and the 79 cast iron PS pump, 82 aluminum PS pump several angles..and ...the results of the 928 biting back

OUCH.....I was gonna said the tires are BALD....then I remembered they are supposed to be that way!!

So that makes 3-4 PacNW racers........add MK and Scott in norcal with a few others about a year out (2-3 or 4??) Add the the LA strokers and you could have a 12 928 field in the next couple years.....MAYBE.....

Just as long as I'm one of them!!

2) Ken Osage - '79 w/5L 16v hybrid
3) Tom Middleton - '82 w/ '91 S4 Engine
4) John Davis- '83 US w/Euro cams

Maybe blazing along the Nevada countryside at extended triple digit speeds, but I'm definitely going to be too fat to be a threat on a closed course. You do remember seeing the newly installed dynomat AND dynoliner in my car right?

P.S. Ken's car is now a '80 body..the 79 is dead dead dead....
Not if the guy building our cages has anything to do with it. He was seriously looking at the car like "oh, just a flesh wound, there's a frame guy on the eastside who can take care of it". He was serious, although I don't know if Ken is. Guess it depends on the cost.

So, is the racecar coming up to the shop tomorrow? If you can make it up, I can drive ya home. The office is closed tomorrow, but I'll be here all day so anytime is good. Give me call. Maybe do the lunch thing, get T and Fossett to come out of the woodwork.
