Agree with others, do both inner and outer. I did them earlier this year along with my steering rack and it made an immense difference on the steering feel and precision.

Whether it's the inner or outer, replace them both, although the parts are sold separately. Screw the inner tie rod to the rack first, torqued to 108 Ft-lbs, then adjust the length of the rod so the outer balljoint mates up as it did before with the hub carrier.

Getting the inner loose is a matter of leverage. I used a pipe extension on my wrenches and it came free easily.

+1 to this. I've done it many times and the tapered pin is usually easy to dislodge with a good whack to the end of the ball joint. Don't hit the pin, hit the rod itself along the axis as if you're trying to drive the rod further into the car. That tapered pin is a friction fit and the blow is usually enough to loosen it enough that it's easy to remove. For me, one good whack with a 4lb sledge does the trick.

Friend had seriously stuck outer joint in his '81 S. We tried with several diffrent separators, heating it etc. He did hit it quite hard when I wasn't looking and beside vise we tried to press it out with large shop press. Nothing helped except drilling it almost totally hollow before it finally gave up and fell on his toes.

That is probably most extreme case possible.
