Default Why is it?

Is it me, or does there seem to be a lot of very nice 928's that show up for sale in or that were imported into Canada that are from Japan?

WOW nice car

But yes these cars are still in their home country. And are a royal PITA to get to the states. Not sure why you would still want to sell these cars to Americans and take US dollars in trade being that its not worth much in the global market. I dont know why these guys arent selling these cars in Germany where people seem to still pay good money for 928's, not to mention the Euro is worth 150% of the dollar.

There are many nice examples of cars that were originally sold in Japan and make their way to our shores. We also get RHD versions which really freak people out when the passenger has no steering wheel.

The 928's are essentially Euro models.

Weird-

'Old' 4-spoke steering wheel and 'old' style dashboard/glovebox/storage shelf on a '90?

Quite typical and no air bags and flared front fenders.

It seems the factory had left overs from previous years/ models that made there way onto Japanese/Canadian versions. Perhaps they served the biggest market of the day first which I assume was California and the rest of the USA?

It be interesting to know where the Porsche cars were being deployed at the time.

As I understand it, there is a road tax in Japan, directly related to the age of the car. The older the car, the higher the tax. Most cars in Japan are scrapped after three or four years, or sold on as export to Malasia or Australia. Feel free to correct me.

I also think that this is where all those hot used engines are coming from. They get cut from the cars as the cars are getting scrapped.

also the import duties for +15 year old vehicles to Canada is minimal as are the inspections.

I understand the cars in Japan have to go through a MOT after a certain age. Its akin to the process in Britain but far more stringent making it easier and more cost efficient to replace with new. I was amazed when first arriving in North America to see cars that to the naked eye looked in very poor repair but were still driven on the street.

I'd agree that the ones coming out of Japan are probably due to the increasing difficulty of keeping them licensed and certified over there, in contrast it gets cheaper over time on this continent - especially Canada.

One of the charms of my (US model) 20 year old Porsche is that I can build a world-class runs-with-$100k-competition sports car out of it, but pay the license and insurance of a $500 junker due to the fixed depreciation tables used around here...

Couple things,
those front flairs are simply for show and look HORRIBLE in person.

Plus the pictures in that add, they appear to be taken in the exact same driveway as the pictures of that widebody that was recently discussed on here. and had a couple videos on youtube of it.

Does look to be a nice car if you loose those crappy front pieces.

They don't exactly look peachy in the photos either...

Why would they add these on the Japanese cars ? Did/do they really think it improves the look ?

Cheers,
Erling

different races have different tastes,

asians seem to like these (imo gawky) add ons, they also seem to like stickers (apparent on this car too), just like all the east indians here seem to like riced out civics and escalades with 24" dub rims, or whatever name you wish to put to them. This is the same as redneck caucasians liking pickup trucks.

They just see them differently and I think I should leave it at that before I find myself in hot water

No, the front flares were a government requirement in Japan.

Really ? Do you know why ? I mean, the factory standard wheels aren't protruding beyond the original fender edges, to the best of my knowledge.

Cheers,
Erling
