Question Clutch Howl

I am not sure what causes it, does anyone have any idea of how I can fix it?

Cool

I had that last year. Mine was the throw-out bearing. Others have adjusted the fork pivot and the chattering went away. YMMV.

Cool

The ball pivot can be adjusted or better still - replaced. It's not easy to get to, but Dave Robert's mentioned how he did it, and I think the procedure is listed on Greg's Tips site.

A noise or rattle with the clutch pedal depressed could be clutch the fork plastic bushing which will give you a rattle, throw out bearing, noise or whine (howl).
With the transmission in neutral and the engine running, clutch pedal released (not engaged) a high pitch whine, noise or rattle could be clutch fork bushing, pilot bearing, torque tube bearings, transmission bearings. While driving the car include transmission gears, differential, axle, or axle bearings. Let me know what you find.

Good Luck

Hi Guys, I just found this forum and it looks like a good one. I have a 1979, 928, 5-speed, 100 Kmiles, that I have had for twenty years. I have that clutch howl if I start out a little fast. If I really rev the engine and let out the clutch, no howl. If I take off normaly, no howl. I believe that it has always had the problem, but now getting a little worse. I was told that the double disc clutch was prone to cause this problem. I will just live with it unless there is an easy fix. My howl is between the clutch plate and the pressure plate for sure. Thanks, Ern

Ern, that is the exact same instance when I get my howl (actually it sounds more like a almost like a chirping squeal).

Can't seem to get rid of it. It will howl at times even when i just let the clutch out a little fast coming off a stop light. It is really annoying and sounds like I am sqealing my tires.

What to do , what to do...?

Pat, I know just how you feel. Everytime it happens, I look around to see if a cop is watching. If I really get on it hard it won't happen or when I start easy. When I am starting on a little incline, I need a little more engine speed and chirp she goes. I don't know how long you have had your car but mine had been doing it for the last ten years and fifty thousand miles so it isn,t much to be concerned about. Ern

This is very interesting. I have a '94 968 and get the same howel when I need a bit more engine speed from a stop (on an incline). Only happens when it is very hot out and the car is hot (driven for a bit). I havent gotten anything changed or looked at yet. I was told by two Porsche mechanics to leave it alone and not worry until it happens more often (not only on very hot days).
