Post Real HID's installed in 8" H4's

Into my new 8" H-4's I installed a 'SPW' real HID system, 4800K (mostly white, a little blue), with Hella ballast, advertised with hi/low beam capability.

The high beam doesn't really work that well, but the low beam light output is amazing, especially in these large headlamps. It's like driving during a full moon; all the other cars look as if they using kerosene lamps.

I ended up installed the ballast on the underside of the headlight, on the center (black) support, with 3 zip-ties and some closed-cell foam. I had to fab a new seal for the back of the headlight with some 1/2" sheet rubber and a big-ol' galvanized washer. The wiring was straight forward with the harness provided.

PS: I don't recommend paying extra for the high beam (I got them slightly used off E-bay), at least not in the H4's, perhaps the H5's would work better.

Do you have any pictures of the setup?

Could you explain the issues involved with horozontal and vertical systems?

I was under the impression that our lights could not be switched, as they move....

I will post some pics soon.

The only difficulty I encountered was a place to mount the ballast. The bulb has an H4 base and plugs right in. The wiring harness plugs into the original H4 connector and I routed the wires through the hole in the bottom of the headlamp holder and then through the fender where the oem harness goes through, then to the power nub on the right side. The kit only uses the original light power to switch on a relay to run the ballasts directly from the battery. I think it is about 90W to ignite the bulbs, then only 35W to run.

If you look in the fender with the headlights up, you can see the bottom of the headlight holder. This is where I mounted the ballast, and moves with the holder up/down. The wire from the Hella ballast/ignitor is only about a foot long so this was the only spot I could mount it.

Cool! Thanks! Looks like you did a good job stuffing all that wiring and ballast into the stock shell. Congrats! How much did the lights and ballasts cost you? Did you get them used, or new?

I bought the kit for $390 "used one month" off E-bay.

I had been looking for a few months on the internet, and found 'AutoToys.com' (no affiliation) seemed to have the best prices I could find at $375 for single, hi/low for $520. Also 'HidKits.com' has a hi/low for $750.

Some other sources I bookmarked:
nextcollection.com
autodirectsave.com
spwusa.com

sylvania.com/xenarc - 7" sealed beam setup

performancebike.com - real HID for bicycles!
