Default Windows not opening

Did a search but couldnt find anything.
1984 S2 Manual.
If the door is open (interior lights on) the window switches (both sides) work fine, windows open close . When the door is closed they do nothing. How can this be?

Is this with the key on or off? If in the on position, it sounds like a loose connection at the motor or within the loom. If in the off position, they are operating normally.

Key in, ignition on. If its a loose connection how come they work when the door is open? Dont really understand. Is it a loose connection at the inition switch?

The wire loom moves when the door is open. That could be pulling the connector on the motor and causing better contact. I would treat this as any other intermittant electrical problem and check all of the connections at the motor and grounds.

This is an ROW configuration. The window controller relay is active whenever triggered by the accessory position until the doors are opened. But ROW vehicles also enable the windows while the doors are open. Seems your window controller relay may be the problem - especially since your interior lights do work.

It could also be your X-bus accessory line from the ignition switch.
Do your front fog lights work OK?

Try removing the window regulator relay and jumping terminals 30-87 do the windows now work with the doors closed - if yes replace the window regulator relay.

But this affects both windows. Opening one door allows the window switches to work on either door. Closing the door and the window switches no longer work. The window switches start working again the moment the interior lights come on.

Ah. Thanks. All I have to do now is find the window regulator...

It freaks me out when you guys do this. I have the EXACT same problem, and was about to post something myself. Thanks s2art!!.

Ok, not exactly the same.....BUT...... My drivers side window will only work with the door open (at 80 mph...er...um.."hiway speeds"..that is), it becomes a little precarious to open the window. Everything else works fine. Interior lights, fog lights, passenger window. At least on mine, I think checking the connection on the motor is accurate. i will check the relay though. Is the regulator in the door by the motor?

Yours sounds like it really is a broken connection in the door (hinge passthrough area) due to flexing (USA car right?).

The window regulator is a relay on the Central electric panel (pass footwell) you should have a diagram on the cover telling you which one it is.

(E.Mickelson - this is not your problem if your passenger window works correctly...)

Thanks Alan. I agree. I have to pull the panel anyway, to fix my exterior door handle mechinism......

AGAIN!!!

so I will check out the connection then.

On that note, why do those handles keep breaking? Do other people have this problem? Is it common? Is there no end to these questions?!? I guess i'll save it for another thread.
