Default Am I just going to ruin my airbox?

I was wondering if anyone had opened up some extra holes in their airbox to increase airflow. It seems like there may be some restriction from the front of the engine compartment to the rear. Am I just going to ruin my (expensive) airbox opening it up with a couple of 1 1/2 inch holes, or would it help?

Has anyone tried this?

yes. you will ruin your air filter box.

the intake is designed to be connected to the scoops above the radiator support because it's cooler air coming in from there. putting holes in the air filter box will let warm air in----not good at all. and that's just for the top side of the box.

if you want one to experiment with, I have a few......

if you have the intake tubes that neck down instead of the same size from front to back, you can swap them for a variety of different units, most preferably those available from Roger (Thanks again!!!!).

the ones that don't have the same diameter were used to cut the intake noise down, but also cut some HP----probably some pitifully small amount.

But don't put holes in the box.......

Default Scoops

Hi guys !

Russ, (or anyone)while we`re at the subject, do you know if anyone has tryed NACA ducts in the bonnet right in front of the air scoops ? I`ve seen Gemballa kited cars have them, but are they functional ?

Compaired to my other cars I'd say that the 928 air box flows very well. Jason

Kibort claims that he did get some improvements by drilling holes in his airbox.

What he didn't realize is that at the same time he switched from Mobil 1 to Amzoil! It's the oil, stupid!

Search for user "Mike Schmidt" and airbox, you should find some interesting info. The summary as I remember - you need to get the filter higher above the MAF (or whatever is measureing the air on your particular model) than stock. Mike had installed a spacer to make this happen.

On it's own, this probably doesn't do anything, but if you have a stroker or blower, or even a fairly high flow exhaust, it may help a little.

Sounds like a lot of work for a tiny gain. Jason

If you want increased performance through higher airflow, why not stop pussyfooting around and go forced induction? Ramming another half atmosphere of air + a commensurate amount of additional fuel makes a difference you can certainly feel.

I assume if there were easy fixes like holes in the air ducts or nascar ducts then those stupid German engineers would have eventually stumbled on them.
The reality is the 928 is a well researched & well engineered vehicle; noticeable performance improvements require real work. If I had the cash & time I would go for a S/C.
