Default Tranny issues...Overdrive

Hey all Yesterday morning I headed out to work in the 84 and as she went through the gears it shifted as good as it always did, when it hit overdrive it just reved like it was in neutral? I thought I had lost OD......1,2 and three still shifted firm as new. When I got in her to head home from work all gears were perfect once again but OVERDIVE was back and working fine????? No slippage...no noise.....

What would make OD go for a short trip then ten hours later be good as new??

Thanks

Hi

Ummm 928s dont have an "Overdrive" ...do you mean 4th gear (top gear) on an autobox ??

If so..check the auto fluid level (at back)

All the best Brett

I second the "check the auto fluid level", low fluid can cause this. Don't ask me how I know.

Well most consider 4th overdrive in Germans too I thought, but you got the idea. Just a very strange problem with the issue there once and then gone. I hate to say it but this thing has aggrevated me enough to the point I am thinking about selling.

You would not be the first to do so ...."aggrevated me enough to the point I am thinking about selling. "

Sounds like your "interesting day" threshhold may be a bit low for 928 ownership.

I hate to say it......I am a German fanatic. This car is my daily driver and I love it. It does everything well. Now I found my little one's car seat does not fit in the back so we have to get my 454 Suburban out when we go play without mommy. etc. but I can't put it down because the MPG's are so much better then the truck.

PS my wife keeps the keys to her 5 series hidden!!

OK "my little one's car seat does not fit in the back" why not put it in the front seat ? There are no airbags to be concerned about.

Get a different car seat. The Britax Star Riser or StarRiser fits well. They show up on ebay every now and then. But I use them in the front seat just as easy.

Hi Brian

I think the misunderstanding is a language problem lol...

In England an "overdrive" is a button on the gear lever that usually puts the car into an overdriven gear for economy..sort of like an extra fifth gear...in the US maybe it means something different ?

Going back to your "slipping" problem.....when was the auto fluid at the back actually last checked ??

All the best Brett

I like the language problem it gives me a chance to learn from others.....From what I checked it looks like the fluid level is correct..Check me on the process. My main problem with the car is that it is my daily driver and I do foreign repair and autobody restorations from my garage in my spare time. I am not having free time to work on my own stuff. I am restoring a 1980 450 SL and a 1979 MGB and my free time has been at an all time low.

Car warm......trans in Neutral.....check level ?

Does this sound right, because I drove it today and it ran and shifted perfectly.

No 4th gear, not a common drivability complaint with this transmission, I would say stuck valve in the Valve body. The least expensive possible fix, transmission flush with a cleaner added to the fluid.

Steve that was kinda what I was leaning to. The car sat for about a week as the weather turned to crap in Southern Ohio and I was feeding my monster Suburban fuel. My true experience with German cars has always been sitting is not a good thing......my 928 always seems to run better after being ran a little hard.

Hey all good news. I did find my vac. modulator was bad and I did what Steve Cattaneo had said above about the new fluid and a good flush and now she is back up and running perfectly. Its amazing what can be gained/lost by the P.O. inattention to maintance.
