Sounds like clutch chatter. What are you using for gear oil ? There are additives to lubricate the friction discs (clutches). Myself and others use synthetic gear oil and have no chatter.

The reason you don't have chatter with syn fluid is that the LSD clutches have no traction to grab on. You've solved one problem but exacerbated another, as you've over-lubricated the clutch pack with syn fluid. I have LSD on several of my other cars, and you may want to go back to dino fluid, or use an LSD additive as GM does on their Corvettes with LSD.

This can also create problems with the EP additives. Syn lube is almost always better in any application, but there are some drawbacks in specific applications, the LSD is one of those applications.

Redline makes a syn oil specifcally for limited slip applications (-NS is for the non-limited slip apps IIRC) . As Doc mentions, you can use a commonly-available friction modifier in conventional lubricant to 'tune' the friction in the clutches. The Devek crew used to recommend a dino oil (Swepco) in limited-slip applications I think, definitely in the manual gearboxes.

You can 'tune' the clutch pack friction with new disks and shims to get pretty much any amount of lockup you want. As I mentioned earlier, lots of friction/lockup is not always a good thing. In fact, it's only a good thing when you have uneven traction when accelerating, and generally only in a straight line if the clutch friction is cranked up. If I was driving in snow it would be a slow-speed blessing when accelerating, and a curse when cornering, for instance. Think of how a 4-WD true car drives on hard pavement. A tight LS unit gives the same symptoms times half, with only two wheels crabbing as they try to turn at the same speed going around corners.

Check wsm 39-212a-f. The LSD is rated at 40% lock-up. That is with the correct amount of discs in good condition along with pressure rings. Less or more discs will not yield good results. Less discs, may as well stay with an open diff. More discs may cause it to be close to fully locked and would be more difficult to assemble. The slip torque value of 25ft.lbs is with unit out of vehicle. The torque reading could easily be distorted by the axle length or any movement etc.
