Default Check your tranny fluid levels!

Been a while since I posted on the list so I thought I'd remind everyone to check their tranny fluid levels regularly especially if you own an OB. I had not checked mine since buying my 81 several months ago. I have always had weak off the line performance from the car but this past week it has been really bad and the transmssion was slow to engage when put in to drive. I thought I had a tranny going bad or the pump was getting weak. Turns out that the tranny has a leak somewhere(it's fully coated) and my tranny was down 1.5 quarts. Refilling the tranny to the proper level made a huge difference in the performance of the car. The one question I have is there supposed to be some kind of seal or gasket for the reservoir cap? Mine has none and I thought that might be the source of the leak. Jason

the cap should have a black rubber seal inside it, if there isnt a seal then after the car sits about 2 days without running the fluid will drain into the pan anf over fill the cap level, you can buy a new cap/seal, dont try to tighten the pan rtaining bolt too much they get torqued to about 6ft/lbs too much and the pan seal will split/slide and then you will have another leak

Thanks Merlin I'll get on that seal ASAP. I need to put a order in to 928 INT anyways. Jason

Just changed my tranny fluid on my 84' auto and there went about 3-4 liters more in it than came out of it! Can't say performance is suddenly better, but it changes gear slightly better.

Just replaced the filter and drained an 86 this weekend. Thought the level was ok before hand. Now it shifts so much better it seems like a different car.

Did you drain the torque converter too? It has a plug. Lots of fluid in there. You have to have a helper rotate the engine with a big socket wrench little by little until its visible in the small grate.

to find the TC drain plug fit, a small piece of cardboard to the grate as you turn the drain plug will push it out when it gets to the grate.
That said the TC drain plug is supposed to be lined up with the grate when the engine is at TDC so try that first

Mine leak by the torque converter seal.
Was changed ($$$$$), but still leak a little bit. Don't plan on fixing it since it leak like a drop every week.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic. Some like the Redline racing fluid.

Your instructions seem unclear.

Can you clarify?

He's saying that since the drain plug on the torque converter sticks out, just wedge a piece of cardboard up until it almost touches the converter and turn the engine slowly by hand. When the cardboard moves, it should be because it hit the drainplug.
