Default LED Instrument Lights on an 86?

Has anyone switched out the incandescents for LEDs in the dash of an 83-86? I'm going to pull my instrument cluster next weekend to replace bulbs and clean contacts and may do an LED swap.

I've read Keith's writeup, which is great, but I believe there are differences in bulb types between the GTS and the 83-86.

It looks like some are an easy interchange, such as the four main illumination bulbs. But for the various indicators and warnings the 83-86 has a bulb in a black plastic holder and I am not sure if that is the same as the later cars.

If I get this figured out, I'll do a writeup for the 83-86 cars (I think Keith is planning one too)

Thanks,
Matt

I have pre-configured LED conversion kits in cool white and blue. I can also get red. These have become pretty popular with my customers here and overseas.

Thanks, Nicole. I was able to figure out the interchange for the illumination LEDs. It looks like that's what your kit contains, or does it include the 19 1.2W bulbs for warning lights, fog light indicator, etc?

I am looking for the interchange information for those. I suspect I can use wedge bulbs in the original bases, but won't know until I actually open it up.

I fitted Nicole's LED replacements for the interior lights last weekend; easy job.

This weekend I hope to have time to fit her Pod illumination LEDs.

Matt,

Looking forward to the write-up. I've had that damned pod out so many times I can do it in my sleep. My directional indicator just went out and those warning bulbs are a PITA to replaced too. I'd like to switch over to LED too.

I haven't been into mine yet, and I will be using your pod removal info. Although, for what I'm doing, I think I will pull the cluster this time. My cluster "!" doesn't work, so that's what is prompting this.

I plan on doing it on the 8th with the help of another local owner. I have a complete set of LEDs from superbrightLEDs.com. I suspect, though, that we'll get in there and find some differences and issues that will keep me from buttoning it up the same day.

The ashtray lamp is supposed to be similar to the warning lamps, so I am going to pull that and investigate.

Matt
