I looked mine up on this little site. It seems to be pretty accurate.

I have to do an intake refresh as my vacuum hoses are crispy and I'm sure my injectors are dirty but My 82 gets three types of gas mileage:
Cold start short runs gives 8-13mpg
Cold start medium runs gives 15-18mpg
All highway I've seen as high as 26mpg and as low as 13mpg.

I purchased my 86.5 from an owner in NorCal and I live in Maryland. The PO had begun an extensive tune up and considerably more was due that I didn't finish until 6 months after purchase. Regardless; the vehicle passed Ca emissions before I bought it, even with a largely disconnected vacuum system. The car is noticably more powerful since a thorough fuel/vacuum/breather refresh. It gets no worse than 15 mpg. Are you comfortable with a wrench? I don't know what MY you have but, but if you remove the air cleaner (and MAF if equipped), you can take a look at what lies underneath. The breather hoses may be crusty, but should all be connected. Try to identify where all the vacuum hoses go and ensure that they are all connected and unkinked. If you aren't into mechanics, then attend some of the SoCal club meetings and some of the members will be glad to give you a tutorial and/or take a look for you. At the least, even if you aren't interested in getting dirty, you can understand how the vacuum/breather system is set up and what needs attention. This will make confidence and save you some bucks.

I think it's a good idea to keep track of gas mileage on all your vehicles as a sudden (most likely decrease) change in mpg will usually indicate some kind of problem that needs attention.

You're going to need this sooner or later if you're only getting 10 mpg in the city. 408.720.9146. You may also need a bail bondsman; I like 1.800.300BAIL, but you might need a deed to a house because they don't take credit or debit cards. And don't worry about an attorney because I know a great one in your area (if you can afford him and you had better be able to do so with that kind of behavior. Whew!! I get 14 - 16 in the city and 20 - 22 on the freeway if I stay below 100 mph, and I have a spastic right ankle. I'm always on it. When you're my age anything that gets you off becomes addictive so I flog this machine all day long. Peel out of Whole Foods parking lot, lay a patch in front of the police station, pass on the shoulder on the right, whatever it takes to get my jollies. But I don't get that kind of mileage!! Have you got some kind of exhibitionist tendencies? You people in SoCal are that way I suppose. The first number is mine, by the way. Just remember you get TWO calls from jail in California. I have an 800 number too in case you don't have a dime while you're waiting to be booked. And remember to never admit to anything at all. Deny it ever happened. Just don't come to Sunnyvale and try that stuff around here, "cause the Sunnyvale police are peace loving and intolerant of such things.
I did re-read the manual & after some research I discovered there is a reserve tank, for 2 gallons.....THAT I MUST SAY PROB THREW MY WHOLE CALCULATION PROCESS OFF!
On the next Cali get together I will learn to be more "how the engine works" inclined! looking forward to it!

There is no reserve tank but the low fuel indicator light comes on when you have about 2.11 gallons remaining in the big 23 gallon tank. Which means a fill up is $75 plus !

I've been buying premium because I wanted to try the old performance trick of advancing the spark a bit, and up here where premium is $3.70 my last fillup was over $90. I'm having the timing set back to stock next week because it doesn't make much difference anyway.

Big Dave You may find that the air vent hose which is attached to the top of the main body of the tank and passes through a hole in the chassis before attaching to the top of the filler neck is blocked smashed and the tank can not fill completely or the sending unit is not accurate. What happens if you drive 50 miles or so after the light comes on ??? You could also run it low then drain the tank to see how much it really has.

On the return from my last trip to LA, I decided to break my rule about stopping for fuel before dropping below 1/4 tank. I made it from downtown LA to Sunnyvale on one tank, but as I was coming into San Jose, the red light came on (for the first time ever since I've owned the car) and I was sweating it all the way. It took just about 20 gals. in Sunnyvale. Wasn't even close, but it had me worrying. If I hadn't been so "energetic" through the Grapevine, I would have made better mileage. And if the LA air had not been so full of smoke I might have burned it a bit more efficiently (and not coughed so much while doing it). It took me a little under 4 hours to make it, not including the 1/2 hour stop outside of Santa Clarita for some unknown reason on the freeway: everyone simply rolled up to a stop and shut down their engines and took a snooze while I suppose some environmental monitoring official up ahead was obseving a strange form of animal crossing the road or whatever; who knows why SoCal has so many freeways and they all seem to be clogged up all the time. I just listened to my CB radio while waiting.
