What the heck is this? (Alarm???)
Can anyone tell me what this nonsense is? The alarm is hooked to it in my Euro. I did a refresh on the engine and hooked the battery back up and the starter won't even kick in. I turn the key and all I get is lights on the cluster. I think it is because of this dinosaur of an alarm system.
So is the little box that says crime stopper, is connected to the big silver box. The silver box has a 3/4" bundle of cables that run behind the central panel. There is a small CIS compliance box to the far left that you can see. Would the CIS box be connected to that also?
Obviously I am trying to eliminate a lot work I don't have to do. If this big box is an alarm, I would love to yank it out.
Anyone know how to by pass the alarm or should I just trace and remove it?

I'd yank everything that was connected to it, personally. I pulled the 1987 alarm out of my S4 when I pulled my engine, and I already had a new alarm in it after I bought it! The schmucks at Car Toys didn't take it out.
Sounds like the starter kill is still hooked up and working, so track down those wires and get the rest of it out!
You'll add .0001hp too, right guys?

Well, after some more investigation, that harness goes right to the rest of the factory cloth taped harness. So, it looks factory. I also forgot to mention that there are 2 toggle switches connected into the harness as well. Not to mention the 3 fuses.
There is also a toggle switch under the steering wheel. What the hell is this for?

Yea, you joke while I
Looks like somebody "Black Mammy'd" the connector terminals on the big silver box. The more I look, I can't see it being factory. I just want to make sure that this box is NOT part of what Porsche installed as it looks like it could be some kind of brain. This is an 82 Euro and shouldn't have a brain...right?

Keith,
Whatever you do, do not flick any of those toggle switches. 8>)
I would pull it all out.

a long time ago someone took a lot of time and skill to rout the wires and cut and crimp them , I would check the hot post connector and the 14 pin connector in the engine compartment. Probably not a bad idea to remove all of that mess and donate it to A Olsen for the 928 shrine

I flipped the toggles.......nothing happened.
I DID find the company that installed/makes the unit. Ironically enough, they are in Simi Valley about 2 miles from where I used to live. I am waiting for a call back. I looked up their "old" manuals on their sight and the model number of this unit doesn't go back that far. Hmmmm maybe this thing is from the 80's.
Thanks for the help fellers. I just sharpened up my snips and headed back out to the garage.

OK, I got in there and pulled the central panel. Looks like a very clean install for it's day. I traced all of the harnesses and other crap and disconnected. I have it all laying on the passenger seat now and need to work on the driver side tomorrow. I spliced the starter wire at the panel back together and she now cranks.
Geez I hate this kind of crap.

Are you keeping the CIS O2 sensor/fuel pressure feedback box?
Did you get rid of the inline fuel injector thingymabob when you had the intake off?

That small black box in the bottom center of your picture, I've seen that before and I believe that is the main alarm component. They still sell that crappy alarm at JC Whitney.
Hope that helps???

I had 2 after market alarms on my old gal + the factory one. none worked but sure looked daunting to anyone considering working on it.... finally yanked it all cept the fac. stuff. still won't work but it's got 100 yards less wire flopping around
if you need me to go by the Simi shop let me know. I'm out there 1x / week to visit clients/etc...

Keith - it certainly is not factory - Porsche would not use screw down connectors like that. Someone did do a neat job - but what is all that crap?? - it actually looks like it was probably expensive...
I think you still need to get rid of it all - after all - it you don't know what it does its a disaster waiting to happen. I'd figure out all the connection points and any obvious changes to factory wiring... easier said than done....
