Post Easy question....a little lazy

I'm planning on picking up an oil filter wrench but I forgot what size our 928 filters are. I don't have my new filter with me and I need to stop at the auto store on my way home.

What size wrench do I need?

TIA

BIG DAVE

Hi Dave,

The diameter is 2 7/8". That is really small for an oil filter. Most filter wrenches won't go down that small. Don't forget the crush washer for the drain plug.

Dave

I use one of those universal types that look like a claw and are hinged like a jaw. They clamp hard as you turn it in the direction of removal. The first time i used it, the filter was on so tight that the tool crushed the filter like a beer can, but it came off. The inside of the jaws have rubber teeth so it doesnt puncture.

There is a Porsche tool for this that is surpisingly cheap (DR sells them), place on bottom of filter and then use a wrench to turn.

Cool

Well...

My dad always taught me to put oil filters on hand tight.

When I bought my S2 in 1999, one of the first things I did was change the oil. And of course, I wound up under the car...skewering the poor thing with a screwdriver in order to get it off.

[Big mess in the garage]

Since then, my hand-tightened filters have never leaked and funny thing....they come off without a wrench 3000 miles later.

[No mess in the garage!]

Hey Normy,

Good advice. How's the A/C?
