Cool... the Cruise control cancel that is?

So the diode what... -isolates the V1 from any pull-up effect at the cruise control end, and prevents the Valentine from canceling the cruise control if that line goes low at the V1 end...? (don't know if it's a buffered input or what...)

That seems to be an idea that I can live with... I don't often use cruise control anyway, but if I do, I shouldn't be speeding too drastically anyhow.

I might just give that a go sometime!

I cant remember where I saw this- but it was in a magazine- the whole unit was in the rear view mirror -when the lights were in stand-by you could hardly see them....

Should add this- when the lights were in stand-by you could NOT see them, however you could just see the outline of the arrows etc-

My buddy has a Boxster 'S', and recently got a $400 ticket. Next week he went out and bought a V1. He then bought the mirror withe the integrated display. If I recall Correctly, it's an exchange program, where you send them your mirror, and they send you a retrofitted mirror in exchange... they then use your 'core' to add the arrows.

That link is very confusing... If I understand it, it's NOT a mirror that they're selling, and it doesn't have arrows or anything in it... it's a $100 interface that allows the display in the 'GPS mirror' to talk to the V1? -Not a display at all?

I think the one you're remembering is shown in excellence... -Or am I mistaken?

Should have tried crack instead of Porsche.

What is integrated in the mirror there is just the V1 remote display - you still need the V1 main unit somewhere... (not so stealth...)

I don't actually like that location for the display either - though its nicely done - to me you have to look too far away from the road to look at the mirror... more direct line of sight is easier.

Keith
I do not use the cruise stalk for cancel - I have a digi-dash cancel on the other side (cancels warnings on the digi-dash).

The cancel stalk for the digi-dash does nothing if you pull it unless there was an outstanding warning displayed - perfect.

I suppose it might work OK on the cruise stalk too - a bit more intrusive though (can't cruise undisturbed). The diode is so muting the V1 doesn't also cancel anything on the digi-dash...

The wierd thing for me is that while the in-mirror display is cleverly-done, neat-and tidy and everything... it doesn't make sense to me... I mean my V1 is three inches away from the mirror!!! -That's a lot of money to move the display three inches!

If you had one concealed like this:

then the mirror display starts to make a little more sense...

But to me, I'd rather have the display RIGHT next to the speedo... I mean if I know there's a radar site nearby, I want to know where my speed is at... IMMEDIATELY... so that I know whether I have to gently and invisibly shave off a few MPH, or dive on the brakes and chuck out the anchor!

While reasonable people may differ on where they might prefer the display, my personal preference is right there in front of me, so I can see the speedo AND the bogey display in one swift glance, and start making 'damage-control' assessments right away.

If you have the detector near the mirror (which is just about the best place for a V-1) then it doesn't seem to make TOO much sense to me to pay all that money to move the display to an (albeit VERY clever, and laudibly well done) in-mirror display.

-It's like having a remote display that isn't very 'remote'!

Oh, and that 'concealed' installation picture above (the 'behind-the-dash' cubby-hole) is about as much use as an ashtray on a Harley... There's NO LIDAR line-of-sight, and VERY likely a metal firewall forward that plastic, rendering it blind to radar, and partially-sighted to everything else...

If other drivers know you have a detector, they will hang with you just behind you and become a nuisance. I've had one follow me much of the way through Nevada until I 'lost' him 'cause he was a pest. Best they don't see the display.

My remote display is in the ashtray. No one behind me sees it go off.

John, is there room enough to fit it inside ?

It would seem like the ideal position. Close the flap and it's hidden, and there's even a power connection in the cigar lighter socket.

Cheers,
Erling

Yes, since mine is there

You just remove the butt extinguisher part and drill a side hole in the tray for the wire.

Sorry - I think the ashtray is not a great location - again just too far from your view of the the road.

Hiding the remote display seems a bit pointless - unless you have an equally good way to hide the main V1 unit... no?

My remote display is in the low center front dashboard position - I like it there since its easy to sse while still having a view of the road... others behind (e.g. in trucks/SUVs) can still see it - doesn't seem to be an issue.

I have never had anyone follow me to piggyback off my detector - at least not for long enough for me to notice - maybe I just drive too fast...?

For me any hiding/obscuring of the V1/display is just for installed looks and to discourage casual thieves. It doesn't seem practical to hide it sufficiently if its actually illegal where you live. (Escort instead?)

I do agree there is quite a bit of room in the ashtray - you can put a bunch of different things there quite effectively.

Thanks again guys for the input.

Alan, I wasn't sure if John was speaking about the Valentine, but agree that there isn't much point in hiding a remote display if you still need a main unit mounted in more or less plain sight.

A system with remote sensors and a main unit/display that would fit in the ashtray would probably be the best solution in my case. Last I looked though, it didn't seem like there was much room in there, but maybe if you remove the insert ?

Cheers,
Erling

Yes - if you take out the insert you have at least 2" behind it.

If the unit is small enough you may be able to fit it in the removable ash tray side & keep the outlet - or you can gut everything and fabricate an aluminum inverted 'tray' to fit and mount whatever you need through it.

Some examples of a different application there:

I just don't like letting the State Trooper light up my car like a Christmas tree so he can see if his gun is working
