I've got the Kumho 712s (on 17" cups). Decent grip, very little noise.....you should be able to find them at your local tire shop for under $120 each.

Hello Gretzky,
Once again, as you say, check out the tire deals at "http://www.tirerack.com/index.jsp". Original size Yokohama tires, the AVS Intermediate's, are on sale, $60 fronts, $59 rears, who knows what you'll find there???? Good luck!

Gretz, I got the Pole position 03 from tire rack and I think they are great. Quiet and excellent performing on street driving. My comparison is only to Pirellis and dunlop though.

Soon to take them to the track as I just finished my timing belt today.

I will need new front tires soon. I have 17" Techno wheels, and the rear tires are Bridgestone RE-730.

On the Bridgestones I like the lip that protects the rim. Do the Kumho's have that lip also? Which other tires have it?

My car isn't a daily driver either. It rarely sees rain, but should be able to perform in rain when it happens.

I don't want to spend more than necessary, of course...

Maybe gretzky99 and I can learn at the same time...?

I purchased the 17" techno twists and Kumho 712's from 928 Specialists about 4 months ago and I have no complaints. Definitely an improvement in ride over my previous 16" flats. The Kumhos have to be the best tire for the money if you are just a casual driver.

Greetings,

I have just had (within 2 months) a new set of Kumho's installed and so far I am very impressed with them. I have to admit that my first concern with tires was the cost. I had earlier bought a set of Kumho's for my 18" rims and loved them, but when I realized that those rims had offset problems and swapped them for a set of polished flats I had to once again shop for a new set of tires. I have not been disappointed. They ride nice, have great grip both in dry and wet and look great... all for a good price.

Martha would say... "It's a good thing !"

What I want to know is.....does Wayne know you're using his name and #? I met him a few weeks ago at Ciscos in Westlake Village, Ca where he was tipping a few back at the bar....there was only one 928 in the parking lot and it was mine! While I like your screen name, I have to get on your case a bit...its like one of the guys in my hockey league who has the audacity to wear #99 on his jersey....most of the guys agree, unless you're wearing a replica jersey with his name, its sort of a "taboo" thing to do......I scored alot more goals than that guy last season!

ps just bustin your b%&ls a little - I'm a huge fan of the Great One

To answer your question Nicole, the 712s DO have the lip that protects the rim - a bit.

They do also, as we may know, have anew higher performance tire out, and I do not know if these tires also have the rim protectors.

This new tire is the Ecsta MX, and I have no info on it, excpet to say it is considered by tirerack to be a "max performance" tire, whereas the 712 is a lower, Ultra High Performance tire.

They only come in 17s.

Thanks, Brendan! In my case this means a decision between the Kumho and the Bridgestone 730 that I have on the rear wheels. I think, price will drive that decision.

Hi Nicole,
I am a big fan of Bridgestone tires (have S-02 or S-03 tires on all my 928s) and had high hopes for a good mid line Bridgestone tire when the RE-730 was released. Unfortunately they have not quite lived up to expectations and are the tire we receive the most complaints about, due mainly to road noise and harshness. Bridgestone even has a little known program where they will take RE730s back and give a pro rated credit towards other Bridgestone tires.

On the other hand the lower priced Kumho tires have been unbelievably popular. They are by far our biggest seller and we have only had one complaint of a tire being internally out of balance and did not get this complaint until the tire was over a year old.!!

Concerning pricing we are a full Tire Rack distributor and sell at the same and usually lower prices that Tire Rack does. Any special you see at Tire Rack you can always contact us and get the same or slightly better. Due to our volume with them they will drop ship directly to our fellow 928 owners so even the shipping time/cost is still the same. The only difference between buying from us or directly thru Tire Rack is we are always cheaper on wheel/tire sets and the same or slightly less on just tires AND by getting them from us you help support one of the companies that support 928 owners exclusively. Tire Rack is a fantastic company and they have supported us tremendously, BUT try calling them with a tech question about a "non-tire" problem with your 928 :-)

Have a great 928 weekend,

Thanks, David, for the information! Now, if I mail order tires, how do the tire dealers react when I bring tires and have them mount these? I've never done it that way.

I wanted to find a tire shop with those sophisticated Hunter balancing machines, and need to make sure they do everything right - are they going to do that, if I don't buy the tires from them? I'm just worried about potential extra hassles...

Hi Nicole,
That is a valid question. In selling tires via mail order for over 5 years now I have only heard of one customer who was treated ....for lack of a better term.. unprofessionally by a local tire dealer. It seems local tire companies don't have the same attitude towards this practice as a lot of mechanics seem to have. I think this is in part due to the fact that they are historically more service oriented, (i.e.. fix flats, rotate and balance tires etc ) and are happy to make money off of the labor of changing tires for people. Just my perception, I could be wrong.
As far as getting good service and the job being done right, I think you are safe there since most technicians are paid by the "job" of changing tires no matter who sells them, The Tire sales persons at a particular Tire store may not be happy but the technicians who actually do the work shouldn't care and usually do just as good a job either way.
Back before I was in the business I always tried to become friends with my local tire technician (I have always owned a lot of vehicles at a time and went thru a lot of tires) or at least get on a first name basis with them . By doing this I always received the best balancing possible and always felt comfortable with how they treated my vehicles, of course a nice tip for a job well done guarantied they remembered me at my next visit.

Concerning warranties it is supposed to and usually works just like buying Genuine Porsche parts. Doesn't matter if you buy Porsche parts from a dealership or a Porsche Parts dealer like us, they still have a 2 year warranty and they are honored at any Porsche Full Dealership or Porsche Parts dealer. Even in the rare occasion that you had a warranty issue ( I can only think of 4-5 ever that I have heard of in the thousands of tires we have sold) and the local dealer would not help you, trust me Tire Rack is the best of any large company that I have ever seen in how quickly and efficiently they handle warranty issues.

Hope that helps,

Nicole,

Tire Rack has a list of providers through which they provide local installation and services. One can purchase items from Tire Rack and have them drop shipped to the local provider.

For example, the Big O Tire franchise in Castro Valley is one such provider.

I would think that the same services would be extended to a purchase through other Tire Rack partners (e.g., 928 Specialists).
