Default Rack Parts

I looked around and did not spot who sells the rack mounting bushings and the rack stops. I have the 78 rack and the rubber stops are shot. Do I replace them with metal stops? What about the rack bushings. The best quote I got on them is $25 a bushings.

Thanks

No need to spot, we all know who is in business to sell these parts.
Call one of the Rennlist sponsored vendors.
You have one in CA, one in TX, one in WI and one in NC.

I sell the rack bushings for $15.80 each or you could try Carl's solid bushings.

The bump stops are a Porsche part -- you want the rubber version that is correct for your rack(2-3 versions IIRC). It sandwiches between the tie rod end and the rack end; a replacement may not squish down exactly like the original, so you'll have to check toe after replacing.

John,

Yes I know I can buy te original parts from Jim. My question was more on advice on what is best to use. Are the sold rack bushings better? I did not see them listed on Carl's web site so was unsure where to get them.

Should the rack stops be upgraded to the later model stops.

You know I thought this list is here for helping others sort out the details on these things. The e-mail list is far more frendly and helpful. There just seems to be so many snide and less than helpful remarks here.

Thanks for the help everyone.

That wasn't clear by your first sentence.

You should have been on the email list years ago! You would have gotten you fair share of snide remarks.

Changing over to the solid mounds will transmit more road vibration to the steering wheel. There is a reason why they were rubber from the factory.
The rack stops are just rack stops. Use whatever is available.

Thanks John. I did not mean to beat up on you. I was just trying to determine the current thinking on the best solution. Not done this job before. Some where I remember some one talking about plastic bushings and even custom made rack stops.

Dan the podguy was on the email list at least 6/7 years ago, still is as far as I know.

Now who knows how these bl**dy PS fluid solid lines are supposed to go back together - they must have warped while off the car.

You're right, Dan. But it's just a few guys. I try to ignore them. Maybe they can be blocked?

However, when they critique and "pick apart" a car for sale, their comments cut to the bone and are usually helpful as they can spot potential problems that I'd never have noticed. Or scare you off of a good car.

Someone recently noticed in a foto of my '88S4 that it might have a replacement fender. Man, I couldn't tell that! So I'm going to have it checked out by a Porsche mechanic that I trust. I hope the viewer is wrong.
