When I had a coolant leak during my student time, my mechanic told me to use paprika (the spice). It doesn't clog the system, but when it gets out though a leak and encounters air, it gets really sticky and seals pretty well....

In my case, I had a cracked engine block - cooland spraying from othe block. The paprika worked wonders, until I found a used engine!

Now that's a spicy engine...

Can you imagine driving behind a paprika treated car? Mmmmm, the aroma of exotic spices.

Hi Gang,

I DO NOT PERSONALLY OR PROFESSIONALLY KEEP A LIST OF ANY TYPE CONCERNING PRODUCTS FROM OTHER COMPANIES CONCERNING GOOD OR BAD EXPERIENCES!!

Heck, I don't even have time to keep a "list" of problems with my own Products (other than in my head :-)!!

On a more fun note, I am looking forward to seeing many of you at Sharks in the Mountains in a few weeks!!! PARTY TIME !!!!!!

I'm sorry to hear about your radiator, but to say:

quote:
..this known defective product

is a bit of a stretch to say the least. Although some may had issues doesn't mean it's a defective product.

Cool

Nicole...I didn't know you had a Cayenne!

OHH wait...you said paprika...whoops, my mistake...

Hmm. I wonder if cayenne would work. I put pepper in most things [I love hot food!], and since my coolant is propylene glycol-based [a food additive]...

OK. I'll stop now-

CHRIS: I considered the stop-leak stuff for about 1.37 seconds. I'd do something like that to the '66 Ford truck that takes me back and forth to the airport and health club, but a car like my 928 that I want to perform at its peak not just now but perhaps 5 years from now is not something that I will use a "band-aid" approach to repairing, especially considering that once you put that stuff in the cooling system, it is VERY hard to get out. I cannot help but believe that this stuff would be detrimental to cooling system efficiency. Thanx for at least proposing the idea~

Normy:

It's the red paprika powder that you put in. According to the mechanic it does not clog or clump in the system, it only seals when it gets in touch with air. It worked for quite a while...

One year we had a such cold winter, it was -32 Degrees CELSIUS (not sure what that is in Farenheit, but it's freaking cold). On both mine and my brother's car, the coolant froze in the engine, because we only had antifreeze to something like -24 Degrees.

In case of my brother - he had the German Ford Escort (totally different from US models), and tried to start it by rolling down the hill. Well, water pump stuck, timing belt jumped, valves damaged.

I had an '82 Renault Fuego (Euro version, much nicer looking than US models, but with a smaller 96 hp engine) - it was hit a bit differently: The freezing coolant put a vertical crack in the block, somewhere between the cylinders. Over time, I had more and more coolant spray into the engine bay.

I started measururing the car's consumption in liters of coolant per 100km. Translated into mpg, I got about 100 miles out of the gallon of coolant, with the efficiency going downhill...

The mechanics found the crack with some flourescent additive and that special lamp, and suggested the paprika treatment, until I would find a used engine. I found a crashed car that was one year younger than mine, and had the engine swapped, along with some other upgrades. Then I sold the rest to some guy who needed an interior. This way, the engine cost me about $500, and parts and the labor of some friends who did it were another few hundred.

The car drove like new afterwards, but that new engine was just not as powerful as the old one. I guess the paprika was eventually flushed out of the system. The last time I saw the car it was about 12 years old and must haqve had in excess of 150k miles on it...

Oh, and on the tongue in cheek comment, as I have always said to you here and on the mail list, get a grip.

I have the Devek Radiator - since my ownership, no problems. I'm, knocking on wood as we speak, I have a track event this weekend so I don't want to jinx myself. The last event, I blew a radiator hose. After close inspection it does look like my rad. was repaired at one time, I think the PO took some scrapnel (sp) from some artillery fire. The area of repair is rather large - about the size of a quarter.

Ed - Please get a grip on your own reality.

Whether you type a or a or anything else that passes as a quasi-pseudo attempt at some sort of "net" based language, what you say in type is what you say in type.

You ACT like you work for the INS, and you REALLY don't ACT like you like anybody....

Cool

Thats fun about the paprika Nicole! I rummaged around tonight and found that I have some paprika in the cupboard. I mixed it with a little water...I'll pour it out in the sun tomorrow to see what it turns into.

[that and you reminded me of a truly outstanding recipe for salmon that involves paprika that I have not done in quite some time...!]

-For what it is worth, as the radiator leaked, I started adding only coolant. Since I normally run about a 65% water/35% coolant mixture, this naturally raised the percentage. Propylene Glycol [and to some extent] Ethylene Glycol are naturally self sealing...which means that they do what paprika apparently does, though obviously less effectively. I noticed that as the percentage of coolant climbed...that the drips subsided. I'm not sure how far the coolant percentage climbed before I finally replaced Devek's vaunted radiator, but it was probably pretty high.

My biggest concern was that it would blow out suddenly 100's of miles from home...so I found a replacement.

No oil cooler; however, today I found a workable external oil cooler kit; I'll post about it when I am sure that it works~

Hi Normy:

I'm curous to hear the results of your paprika research. I've never tried it on anything but food and my Renault Fuego (which was a "GTS", by the way - just not a 928...)

Thom:

It can get pretty awful in good (c)old Germany - especially in clear winter nights. When I came to California, I asked for meteorological asylum...

Marc, when I received MY Devek radiator, what was the jar of paprika for? I just figured "Bon appetite!" (not really)

Now I have been known to dump a handful of ground black pepper in the radiator of a 69 Camaro with a leaking freeze plug. Most cost effective automotive fix I have ever come across. (really). But upon later tear down of the engine, (back then, I'd find any excuse to pull an engine) I found - NO DAMAGE. Not even a sign of black pepper anywhere.

Would I do this to my '78 5-speed? No way. (Well, unless circumstances dictated.)
