Post Help finding "The Car"

I've read books, posted questions, read solution, sat in cars, and saved money. Now it's time for me to pick out the car I want. Only problem is that I can't find it!

What are my odds of finding a metalic green, 5-speed, early model 928? Preferably one with the 4.5l engine*. Good, bad, poor, never? If you have any hints of places to look, I'd be thankeful.

Also, how common are electric windows, power locks, and power seats?

Finding the car is half the fun. I happen to know of a 1979 Euro here in Miami. It matches your description, but it only has 15K original miles and they want alot of $$$$$$$ It's so perfect, it makes me sick If you don't find one, you could always "make" your own. Most of the early cars need to be restored anyways... Good Luck

I deffently don't want that car!

I'm rough on cars. I basicly expect to put about a million miles, and a good number of minor scratches and chips. I'm also not so nice on interors. Mind you, I'm not abusive. I take care of my car, but I put it through alought.

It will be my daily driver/long distance car, followed on by my possible racer, depending on how things go.

The statement "you could always "make" your own" intersts me. Can you explain? What kind of "makeing" are we talking about?

Almost certainly no dice.

Strike 1: It's an auto. I wanna manual. (I could settle, but why?)

Strike 2: It's an 88, and almost certainly dear to you. Wouldn't want to take your pride and joy away, now would I?

Thats two strikes aginst your car. Is it green, does it have power windows, seats, and locks? If not, I'm not realy looking for it.

Clearly this car is not about makeing sence, but an experence in desire. Why not the the "dream car"?

Have I got the car for you..... :-)
It WAS/IS a project car of mine, but I am finding I just have less and less time and desire to finish it.
It is a 1983 US model, 5-spd, with working power seats, windows, sunroof, and doors. The headlights work like a champ now, thanks to some (a LOT) of help from people on this board, and I am now looking into the fog and front running lights.
It has 17" chromed Cup wheels on it, with NEW rear tires. The exhaust is custom, and sounds JUST LIKE a sports car SHOULD!!
The interior is a Light Tan, or Beige color, and is worn, but everything pretty much works. It needs carpet, a new windshield (there is a crack along the base of the current one), and some TLC.....
The exterior has a custom paintjob. It is Red with very small and subtle gold-metallic flakes to it. In addition, the front and rear of the body have been updated with bumpers from a 1993 GTS model, along with the rear wing.....
If you are interested let me know, and I'll take some pics to email you.
Either way, good luck in your search.
Barry

Green is a rather uncommon color in the 928 world, so finding a factory original green 5 speed car will require some patience and hunting.
The "solution" that Weissach is referring to would be to find a 5 speed early car that has the other features you want but needs a paint job - and paint it green. But a re-paint involving a color change is a lot of work to do well, so unless you are willing/able to do much of the preparation work yourself you should be prepared for the cost of this. It might be a good idea for you to talk to some body shop estimators in your area about the cost to help determine if this is really the way you want to go.

How could you call that a "project car"? It may have been when you bought it, but it certainly isn't now, everything works! Sounds like a well loved, well used, proper auto. Eigher that, or I come from a diffrent bred of car buyer.

A "project" car, to me, has basicly no "power" anythings that work. The engine may run, but not well, and the interor always needs work. Course, normal cars need new exaust, cams, and a few other items.

I've got one major problem. I've intersted, provided the price is right, but it's not green! I fell in love with a green car, and I honestly never liked red ones. I know, a guy that doesn't like red sports cars, what is the world coming to?

Can you send me a photo and price tag anyways? Maybe I'll like your take on red. (eighter that or maybe my girl can convince me I need it.)

I'm sorry to post an additional reply. I hate it when other people do, but I'm finding myself forced too.

Barry B. can you please send me a few photos of your car? I'm thinking that red with golden flakes is diffrent frorm red. (yea right, I'm second guessing myself.) I'm in no hurry mind you, but the odds of finding a good green car seem to be kinda slim, and it would be pointless to turn down a good car. (Yes, I'm trying to rationalize my sudden change.)

Also, please tell me how dear the car is to you? How much do you want for it, and finaly, where is your car?

Thanks

If it's green you want, a paint job might be the only solution. And since you will only take a 5-speed, there are less cars to pick from. But for a 5-speed, it's worth it. I have had many of both. In the end, I always used the automatics for basic transportation and the 5-speeds for pleasure. Most poeple that have driven a 928, say it dives "heavy"(me too). Why?, the automatic. The 5-speed cars feel about 1000 lbs lighter...no joke. But, that's also why they are far more expensive. I would also go for one with the 4.7(83-84), instead of the 4.5. They only cost a little more. They feel alot stronger than the 4.5s and the gears are longer(so it's smoooooth around town). The early ones are a little jerky in city driving because of the short gears. A green 928 is very COOOOL, so go for it.

Hey, don't be in a BIG hurry. When we were looking for our car, an original family owned '79 forest green (greenie) came up for sale, some updates had been done, looked good, but after emailing back-and-forth a bit, my wif decided to take it off our list. It sold for about $5K, I think. I still think it would have fit the bill, but I'm glad we waited for our car!

Question

Hey, just looked on ebay, several that could be your price range? Early 5-speeds to boot, just a paint job away from your ideal.... Some are only hours away from being sold.... Look on excite, maybe do a search for "928 Porsche"? I ran into a few places to look...

I am just going to throw this in for the hell of it.
Even if you say, "Brendan - what are you thinking? That's not the car," I won't be deeply hurt (too much

1981 AUTO (you may have to open your mind a bit - otherwise you will be driving what you are driving for quite a while)

Hey, some say that the switch to a 5spd is a fun one - who am I to ask? Add a pedal here, change a slave cylinder there....

Baby Blue metalic - doesn't look 21 years old - when you see this color, you may rethink green....
Alot of miles, but everything has been well-kept and maintained.

Dark Blue interior, and original everything, except that it has a borla exhaust from a previous owner.

The picture on the side of this post shows the car next to my 89 5spd. If you are interested in more pics, just email me at the below address.

Good luck, and if you need someone to look at a car in SoCal (you didn't mention you place of residence), you have about 35 willing participants.
