Default Fater & Son Bonding - witness to a Shark kill!

So last night my son & I are driving home in my Shark. We’d just pulled up to a red light on our little towns main drag when this tarted up F-150 "Kalifornia edition" (whatever the heck that is) pulls along side. I didn’t know it at the time but I was in a race.

When the light turned green the guy bolted out of the intersection and I just eased off the clutch and darted out in front of him with little effort but backed off when I hit the posted 35mph speed limit. About this time the truck comes screaming by me doing what looked like 15-20 over. As he passed my 17 year old son is getting all upset with me yelling – “come on dad – you can’t let him do that!”

But I told him it was stupid to race on such crowded a main road and that the cops wouldn’t appreciate it at all if they saw us and knowing the cops here as I do (& them my car) – there was a better than average chance of that happening in this town. But all he could think about was how the truck owner was going to brag to all his little bitch friends about how he took out a Porsche. I didn't let it bother me because I knew better and let it slide off my back, but he was totally disapointed with me.

Anyway about a mile up the road – I saw the same truck sitting at another red light waiting for the green. Now this light was on the edge of town and I could’ve been a good boy & turned right at the intersection down our normal road home. But I knew that the speed limit ahead jumped up to about 50mph and that it was usually pretty deserted from this point on especially at about this time of night. Moreover with little or no none-combatants (traffic) or pedestrians to worry about and the next light was about a mile up the road. So that’d mean we’d basically have the road to ourselves. In other words just the kind of road for putting a truck in it place.

As I inched up to the light I could see the guy was itching to go again – so I looked over at my son who was still pretty inconsolable at this point and I could tell he was just wanting to hide in his seat when he saw the truck next to us. That’s when I smirked & winked and said “now this is more like it” as I put the car in first gear and waited for the light to change. But just as my son was trying to figure out what I was talking about the light turned green and I punched it!

At first I was getting a little wheel spin, so I backed off just a bit and the old gal hooked up really nicely. This as the guy in the truck was doing everything in his power to destroy his tires – making all kinds of smoke & noise, as I darted away at sub-warp speed like he was standing still. But this time I kept my foot in it until the tach told me I had to up shift to second (Probably doing about 75-80). Power shifting up into second – I kept the rpms up and continued to lay the hammer down.

Now I won’t say exactly how fast I was going at this point (I’ll leave that to your imagination & those of you with calculators ) but by the time I was considering up shifting again I noticed that my opponent was several hundred feet behind me and getting smaller as my Speedo continued to clime. So I eased it into third and then into fourth and never saw the truck again. Eased into cruize mode & enjoyed taking the long way home.

Glancing over at my son – he was in total shock and grinning from ear to ear and talking about how great that was. That’s when I said – “remember son” smiling “there’s a time & place for everything”.

That’s when he said – “I ain’t going to lie - dad” still smiling “that made might night”.

Ya know it’s great to have a kill like that – but it’s even better with a witness who’ll no doubt be talking about it for months to come.

What? You were street racing with your son in the car?

(Had to get that out of the way... you know someone is going to poo poo you for this...)

Bonding with the boy... priceless!

Bret,

So you got to out wrestle him and show off within a few days of each other? Nice!

This past year as my son was preparing to go to college, we spent a lot of time together doing 'guy stuff'. Not the kind of stuff I did with my dad, like working on cars, but just spending time together. Enjoy every minute of it because soon he'll be gone off to school or whatever he's doing and you'll be wondering where the last 18 years went. (I did let him drive the 928 for the first time about 2 weeks before he went to school, he likey!).

I'll be honest I had a harder time with it than my wife did when my son moved out.

Great story!

You're right of course - someone will probably say or think that. But I think we all know our kids are going to do this themselves at some point - so I figured the smartest thing to do would be to teach them when & where and to be aware of your surroundings. No doubt if I'd of posted this on a couple of the other forums I hang out at someone would come down pretty hard against this.

Not saying it was ok but in our case it was a fairly strait run without any real turns and I’d driven the road hundreds of times when I wanted to “open her up” and blow out some carbon deposits.

Perfect example what not to do – was a few weeks ago when some pretty stupid kids (well ok twenty somethings – their all kids to me) where caught street racing on the same main drag in front of the public library – that houses the local cop shop right behind it. I still doubt they know how they got caught and are wondering where all those cop cars came from.

Great story Bret and I'm glad you smoked the F150!

Kids are great and make all the extra work/effort worthwhile.

My son is only 3.5 but realizes the Porsche is fast and starts laughing uncontrollably whenever I punch it. He also encourages me to go faster and I also say there is the right time for it.

Time flies, enjoy being with them while you can.

Thanks, yeah my 8 & 4 year old daughters love the Shark too.

But just for the record – I don’t think that new F150 was entirely stock. Leastways I’ve never seen a new one smoke his tires like that hasn’t seen some massaging via a power tuning programmer or some sort of aftermarket gizmos under the hood. But again it’s still just a truck with the weight penalty to go with it.

I mean I’ve done a few upgrades to my 01’ Supercrew 4x4 with the 5.4L and it is pretty fast - for a truck. But as hard as I've tried it's never done anything like that truck.

In today's society it is becoming harder and harder to form meaningful father-son bonding moments. We must take them whenever or wherever we can. It is for the kids!

My kids may have a future in law enforcement: they let me know when I am 3 mph over the speed limit. I have to bond in other ways.

Don't forget meaningful father - daughter bonding. Me and my two girls (9 & 10) do the occaisional burnout in our cul de sac. Sometimes in the old pickup, and sometimes in the 928. Its fun.

Usual disclaimer: done in a responsible and quite loud and smokey manner.
