Default 55mm offset

I'm considering an S4 and have been scouring the archives for opinions of fitting 993 Cup II wheels. I have a spare set from my 993's and it will look really nice on the car. I realize that the front offset on the 928 is 65mm and that quite a few people said that its ok. What troubles me is that on one of the threads, there was a link to an Australian page that said with certainty, that fitting 55mm offset in the front will result in the car behaving dangerously!
What are your experiences in that issue?

it makes the car tramline alot more so you do have to pay more attention. However I am running a 52mm offset on the front of my car without issues.

+1 on the tramlining. It's not too bad, and I wouldn't say that it creates dangerous conditions, so long as you go up from a 205 tire that comes on many Porsche wheelsets with the 55mm offset. I was able to get 225's (Mich MXX3) on oem Boxster S rims with very good results.
The combination of <60mm offset and <215mm tires on the front isn't a good one for any 928.

Yeah, I was thinking 225/45 front with 255/40 rear. Thanks for the input!

Hey Danny. Welcome, from another 993-er.

FWIW, I think the 55mm offset should be fine with the 225 fronts. FWIW, I am running an 8.5 in. front on my 928 with a 58mm offset. Lots of folks are using the 993 52mm offset fronts as well.

Keep us posted on the shark hunt.

Thanks Jim! The shark is REALLY sweet... I will know on Tuesday or Wednesday if its going to be a go and I'm really exited. Its exactly what I want ( color and condition) and she will be my new daily driver... Presently the car has new summer tires on 17's so it would be a waste for me to take them off and put winters and since I have the spare 17's from the cabrio, I might as well use them and be able to swap if I want to take the cabrio for a winter spin...

Do you miss your TT?

Danny,

I run 55 offsets all around on my former 993 Cup II wheels, and aside from the exacerbated tramlining, have not experienced any untoward handling characteristics. I don't track the car, however.

What's the issue? Scrub radius and self-centering steering? If we lose some of that tendency of the wheels to straighten up after turning, is that really a big deal? Hopefully someone with more performance car handling will chime in on the question.

Danny

I miss the TT from time to time. It was (is) one hellava car !

However, with my son and wife, the GTS make for more room and I like playing with the V8 power plant.

Sometime, I'll go further into the story, but the specific GTS I bought was a 9 year cycle of karma. When I found it for sale, I had to buy it... it was my turn to be its caretaker.

Thanks for sharing your experience. That is exactly what I was looking for... Not sure what the issue is, I just read this article and it did not really provide sufficient explanation, that is why I posted the question..

True, karma is a big thing. I always wanted a 928 but in the past years, I would not be able to afford it and I did not find really the perfect one, till now, where life circumstances change for the better and I can have it. So it is karma that THE one, just popped up!
Thanks again!!!

I run Boxster rims on my 90GT- 7 & 9 X 17 et 55 all around, 225/45 & 255/40with 21mm spacers on the rear. Had an alignment done at a Sears with the Hunter machine that does not require lifting. Car tracks perfectly through all types of roads- never any tramlining problems. Could probably use new shocks at 17 yrs & 78K miles. These are not my favorite choice of wheels, but they are what came on the car- I REALLY like the new 5 spoke 18 in Cayman wheels as seen here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...QQcmdZViewItem

Brian, I agree w/you re: the Cayman S wheels. I believe that those have closer front offsets for 928s, and will bolt right up to our cars. Trouble is finding a Cayman owner who wants a different look.
EDIT-Just looked at your eBay link, and they confirm the offsets.

I ran the stock 205s from a 993 with the 55mm offset for a year until the tires wore out and then upgraded to the 225s. The 205s are not dangerous but the car seemed to have a little more push in hard corners
