Please help a newbie out with 928 shopping ...
I've been reading the boards and have some newbie questions about looking for a 928:
(1) Normally I would want a 5-speed sports car, but I know most of the 928's were auto, and the folks here seem really happy with them. Plenty of power with an auto?
(2) A lot of folks love the 86.5 (understatement ). Is there a reason I wouldn't look at a newer one? I see a '93 GTS Auto for $20k.
Many thanks in advance for any tips on what to look for in a 928 purchase.

first figure out how much you have to spend, then add about 3000 to it then go buy the most expensive car you can find at that price that you like.
UNLESS you want a project , then you will wind up doubling the amount it will cost you and then add 6000. to the price then you will have your car. either way its gonna cost you i would recommend that you buy a car that has already had the major stuff done, IE, water pump, timing belt, torque tube, intake refiniished, motor mounts, , new shocks, steering rack, new clutch, or trans fluid replaced, good paint , nice interior and it runs and drives well , and dont forget a new updated set of wheels and tires and working air conditioner

Auto are fine but as an owner of one, I wish I had gotten the manual. You have to drive them manually to get the performance out of them or install a kick down switch. Get the one with the best kept maintenance records and condition. It can be a crap shoot so do everything you can to put the odds in your favor.

LUCKe27 - where are you located? If you are in the Northeast, I know of an 87 5-speed for sale that has had nearly all of the catch-up maintenance and repair done in the last year. ($15k+ work of work.)

I'm in Atlanta. Can you point me to somewhere with pictures and details on the car? Feel free to send me a private message. Thanks!

LUcke,
If you want a 5-speed, DO NOT SETTLE! Its very possible that, like me, you'll end up wanting the 5-speed the whole time you're driving the auto, and then you'll end up buying the 5-speed anyway.

Why not drive both auto and manual and then decide. I wouldn't trade my auto '86.5 for manual even if my knee was miraculously healed. I love my auto '86.5 because it is such a good automatic and it starts in first and shifts so well. I would be hard pressed to beat it with a manual and I can have more leg room on long trips or when snoozing in the car at a truck stop because the clutch pedal is NOT THERE. But some people like to shift (while others like to be shifted )
Mr. Merlin is accurate; I spent double the price of my car in the first year to bring it up to acceptable. Then put 70,000 miles on it and it still doesn't use any oil at 200k miles.

Disclosure: I have a vested interest in seeing this car sold for the following reasons:
1) I have the owner's other 928 stored in my garage right now and I'd like to have the space back
2) I did almost all of the work on this car for the owner.
I have various pictures of the car during the tasks and can answer questions about what was done (assuming the lengthly description in the ad isn't enough.)
Don't talk to me about the pricing. That's the owner's job. Given the great shape that the car is now in after the amount of money the owner put into the car, it is not at all your typical used '87 928 and many of the rules of thumb for purchasing a 928 do not (need to) apply.
Why's the owner selling it? He found a very unique 928 that he likes more and he's car-number limited due to space. I tried to convince him to just drive the hell out of this car but he likes what he likes.

Lucke27,
If I were you, and I had the funds, I would very seriously consider the '93 GTS for $20K. Of course, you must have a PPI to insure that the vehicle is worth the $$$. Remember, the GTS is the top of the line. I now have an auto and previously had a manual. I like the auto better for my needs, and I believe that I still get the performance that I want. Good luck on your search

I have one of each and tend to enjoy the auto more. I also track it. I drive both cars very hard and I have never enjoyed an automatic before, but the 928 4spd auto is a winner.
That being said, my next 928 will also be a 5 spd.

I would not give the auto garage space. I am trying to sell one so I am being honest when I write they are crap.
If you really want a nice driving 928 get a 78-79 five speed or and early pre-83 Euro five speed. This is the car Porsche intended to build before the Dentist Wife's marketing guy showed up.
