^^^ what he said. ^^^^ $20k will buy a fairly nice GT, but won't touch a manual GTS. The 87 S4 also comes in manual.

Charley, yes, of course I've seen references. What I was aiming for here was an opinion from folks that have actually driven the different cars ... what would they buy if they were buying right now or again. Books and web sites are no substitute for folks that live and breathe these cars ... at least that's my theory . ~Kevin

You may be noticing some resistance to respond to your question. There is a simple reason.
There are many differences between the models and many reasons for being pro or con regarding those differences.
If you do your own research and then come back and ask a specific question about a difference between model years you will get plenty of co-operation and responses.
For instance, you might ask for an opinion on the desirerability of PSD over LSD. That would mean you have done some research and have a question that requires experience to answer. Totally legitamate.
As it is, it appears you are too lazy to do any research and are trying to get others to do it for you.
I'm sure that is not the case and if you have questions resulting from you reseach that require some experience to answer, you'll get pleny of responses.

The 1989 GT is the very best 928 ever built .... anything else is a compromise. No psd , no airbags, no tire pressure monitor, no excessive oil consumption , no weak con rods , had forged 8 and 9 inch wheels , small resonators, reinforced cylinder heads , the biggest camshafts , close ratio transmission 2.72 final drive ratio... That is my opinion

OK I'll play:
'89 GT you get digital dash, 2.73 gears although a bit noisier then most, but supposedly stronger, mechanical limited slip, it is rare, like appx 65 imported to USA, higher HP then most 330.
Or:
If I couldn't get a '89 GT, I would go with a '91, which has updated seals & sound deadening, GTS shifter, but has PSD (electronically controled Limited Slip) and 326 HP.
But I'm not you and I happen to love the '86.5 in either auto or manual, has 288Hp stock and with chips can put down rwhp very much the same as a GT. They are cheaper and less rare, therefor purists tend not to get their panties in a bind if you modify them or put on a supercharger, turbo or any other go fast goodies. So for the price of a GT, I could get a nice '86.5 and still have money to buy a supercharger to make it out run just about anything on the road today.
