Smile Need info on Santa Clara, CA

I got a call about a possible job this morning, in Santa Clara, CA with Seagate Technologies. Moving to Santa Clara would put me within 700 miles of my children who live in Salt Lake City. The job is also a good chance to round out some corp. investigations background.

Does anyone on the list live near there? and does anyone know what the cost of living would be like?

I think my shark must be missing California, and that is where I got the good Mojo from.

Funny thing is that my current boss hooked me up with the job. His brother is in charge of investigations there.

Any help would be appreciated.

This might even be a chance to meet in person "The All Knowing, Goddess of All Things 928, Nicole"

I live near there. Cost of living is high, at least according to midwest standards. But, I do know a couple people that work here and live in the Carson Valley area. They rent rooms here, and go home on the weekends.

FMR SPY,

I like the Bay Area. I moved here from Northern
Michigan about 30 years ago and haven't left.
The South Bay is a bit pricey, but since the dot com
bust, housing has became almost reasonable (compared
to the East Bay, probably still high compared to
Texas.

Who knows, move out here, you can join us on our
trips to the Nevada desert Open Road Races, then
go visit your kids.

Thanks Cobey.
Austin is pretty expensive thanks to the Tech boom. I was doing ok here making 43, then during the tech bust I have been barley surviving for 36-38. The job there would be in the range of $65,000. I would only be looking for a 1 bedroom apt. What could I expect to pay?

You're looking at $700 - $1300 in that area for a 1 bedroom apt. Check this link.

Cost of living is like NYC out here.

If you are willing to do a 45 minute commute you could get by with a really nice rental for 1500 range. If you don't want to commute, it will be a very small rental in the santa clara area.

While things have quieted down a LOT there is still a lot of things priced way out of proportion.

I would pull the classifieds off of craiglist and the sf chronicle and the san jose mercury news.

We would be happy to add you to the 928 group out here and you would be ever so close to Devek.

Yeah, the prices are kinda goofy. We discovered it was cheaper to rent a 4 bedroom house and a 2 bedroom apartment.

I was wanting to try the racing in Nevada, that would be really fun. There aren't too many events for 928s around here. it seems like there is a larger group in California. Plus, I could get out of this 105 degree heat during the summer.

With all the lay offs and cut backs we've had here in the Silly Valley, lots of folks are trying to make ends meet by renting out rooms in their houses. You could probably get something in the $500 to $800 range pretty easily in the Santa Clara area. If you don't mind sharing a place with someone, it's a very cost effective. There are listing in Craig's list for shared housing.

Maybe we'll see you at Devek days!!

Cool

I live there, in Sunnyvale, next to Santa Clara.
Outrageous prices for housing even today. The prices should have dropped from the boom about 2 years ago, but they aren't dropping much. Owners are holding out, and probably some had bought at the height of the market when houses just coming on the market attracted multiple offers all 10% or more over asking price within 1 to 2 hours after listing. Now the bubble has burst, but their expectations haven't. Sunnyvale is one of the "safest" cities in the US, for whatever its worth. You can hear the grass growing here.
And if you like the ocean, you are a few minutes away over one of the nicest driving roads through redwoods and forests and hiking trails.
And the best part is Devek is right down the street a few (quick) minutes.
You'll like it.

Speaking of bursting bubbles. I'm sorry if anyone finds this offensive, but I too lived in Stupidvale once upon a time. And the only thing I could hear was the sound of TRAFFIC. I grew up in the Area when there were dairy farms. So watching the concrete jungle appear before my very sorry eyes was more than one could take. So I left. And today, even though I still own a house in Palo Alto, I will not even drive through or go near the place. I apologize for being such a turd, as I know you aren't looking for a vacation home. But this subject has so much emotion for me, I just had to post my 0.020 dollars worth.

Well I have been wanting to start working on the car and Devek was certainly one of the places I was going to shop.

Trying to decide what to do with career, have seen a couple of offers to go to Iraq for over 100k a year. That would allow me to come back and buy a GTS for cash.

California sounds like a lot of fun, just not as much money to drop into the car, sorry Devek.

I will know more in the next month, it would certainly be a great job. Just worried about parking for 2 cars and all my junk.

If you have two cars and a lot of junk, as you say, then you might have a problem with most apartment complexes - they often have policies that don't allow you to work on cars.

Even my humble little townhouse complex has a such policy, so I have to close the garage door, if I ever to more than washing or detailing the car.

I'm on the East Bay, and have an area of my home available for rent. It's a 11x12' room plus 8x8.5' sun room and a private bathroom. Evrything remodeled recently. I'm asking $700 including utilities. I've been told that it is hard to find one-bedroom apartments under $1,000 in this area.

Wow, that' a great deal. I will be calling, if it's still available when I get the job.

How much extra is it for shark maintenance advice?
