Well that looks like some good info. I've never seen those test results before. Have you guys seen the ping pong ball displays at auto part stores. The one where they compare the air going though the K&N and the paper filter. When the air is sent through the K&N filter the ping pong ball is lifted much higher showing better flow. Is this smoke and mirrors then??? As usual Roger I should have talked to you first. How often does evryone change their air filters? I've been told that the problem with the reusable air filters is people over oiling them which leads to the problems in the other air filter post. Jason

6mil928,

the K&Ns flow more air yes, so the ball can go higher, but how much air does the car need and how much dirt is let through.

Hi All

I have used K&N`s for years...I have seen both good and bad tests for them reference airflow etc...

The MAF wire burning out is a load of tosh....you REALLY think K&N put so much oil on them it would drip onto the wire ???

Where this rumour comes from is after 50,000 miles you are meant to wash your K&N with a special fluid and then REOIL it.....and people go beserk with the amount of oil THEY use (Not K&N)

The correct way is to wash and allow 24 hours to air dry...then to oil LIGHTLY...along the top of each spine ONLY then allow to sit for 24 hours for any excess to drain through...or just buy another PREOILED one every 50,000 miles...

All the best Brett

I think its the amount of oil the user puts on that MAY kill them.

Not long after I bought my car, I put a K&N filter in. It was brand new and oiled by K&N from the factory. Not long after that, I took the airbox off while doing some work on the car. When I did, there was a film of oil on the MAF's inside walls. That oil film was definitely not there when I had first put the K&N filter in the car. The K&N went straight into the trash after that. I never had the oil film with the stock Porsche filter before I had the K&N, and have never had it again since I got rid of the K&N and went back to stock filters.

Smart man, although, you didn't have to throw it away, there are plenty of people who will take a free one. Well, one person I know of.

Calling John Struthers..................

I'm bringing one of my K&N's for you at 3rd coast. No charge.

Some like it, some don't. I'm in the don't like it side.

After my experience, I would have felt guilty about giving it to anyone and then having them put it in their car.

I have no comment on K&N filters or the conclusions of the test report, but some of the graphs seem to be designed to present a distorted view of the data.

I would use a remote one upstream of the MAF as they do with the supercharger applications, but don't feel comfortable using one as a stock replacement on a 928. Too close to the MAF and not a good fit & finish in my own personal experience. I'd use one on a motor I was willing to beat on, or maybe if I was running in a dusty environment and needed to replace/wash it all time. Not on a 928 motor though, to temperamental and expen$ive to screw around with. Letting extra dirt and oil through is not worth the extra few HP to me (and even that is controversial). To each their own though, do what ever you are comfortable with. Its your motor.

Well since I don't have a MAF on my 81 I'll take a free one if your serious. Jason

They are not comparing it to the stock Porsche filter, which flows very, very well and is not considered a restriction on cars with over 50% more power(therefore flow 50% more air) than yours. Any increase in airflow with the K&N comes at a cost. Go ahead and use it for a while, then when you discover the oily film under the filter in the airbox and note the amount of grit that also got through and stuck to the oil film, come back and let us know how you feel about it.

The problem with the stock 928 air filter is the price. I like to change my air filters frequently(Where I live is very dusty) so at 35.00 each it gets a bit ridiculous . I probably change my filter 10 times a year so 350.00 a year in air filters is not going to cut the mustard. The cost of my other vehicles air filters is nothing compaired to the 928. With the 928 the cost has become an issue. Jason

You just answered your own question.

If you live in a dusty area i would be useing the best air filters to look after
your car and with more air flowing through the K&N the more dust
that will get through.

Good luck
