Found a 1984 928 with under 10,000 miles
What do you guys think is a fair price I should offer if the car checks out perfectly?
One owner all records concorus ready? 5spd <img border="0" alt="[byebye]" title="" src="graemlins/wave.gif" />
Thanks
Darren

I haven't got a clue either. I guess whatever
you think is fair. A low mileage '84 is not the same thing as a low mileage GT or GTS, but still
will command a premium. Has it been driven a fews years and stored, or just driven very little each year? Whatever happens, just remember that as soon as you get it and start driving it the value will go down sharply compared to a higher mileage example. Sounds like a nice car, what colors?

Darren,
You're looking at a 19 year old car that's been run an average of less than 500 miles a year. ALL of the maintenence issues that would apply to a 100,000 mile car will apply except for the drive train wear. The electrics, the seals, the belt, the bushings, AND many cosmetic issues are largely time related. Don't be overly impressed with the low mileage.

Old business adage of letting the other person shape the bid and ask--who knows how low he will start?
For a concourse car--it all depends on the receipts for care. If all perfect 15K.

Perhaps the question is do YOU WANT a 1984 928 ? second what will you do with it ? Even with the low miles the rubber bits on the engine will be suspect and be very sure the coolant was changed every 2-3 years . Always ask " what will you sell the car for ?.......never offer any amount . If someone says "I would be happy to get X ". You do not want them to be happy ; just not offended by what you will pay . So offer less , negotiate many cars seem to sell for 75% of the advertised price .

If it's concours Ready, under 10k miles, checks out - I.E. No leaks, Belt not dry, A/C Blows Cold, All Interior options Work -Estimated Guess @ 11-13k.
Any Pictures?.

Darren,
No matter wht you pay, keep $1000.00- 1500.00 in your pocket to bring the car up to snuff. Timing belt-water pump, tires, some rubber hoses and vacuum lines here and there, change all fluids, etc. That's assuming you are doing the the labor yourself.

Guys here is the email from the seller - he says he is pretty frim on $16k but we all know that everything is negotiable
To answe the question "why do I want a 84 928 and what am I going to do with it" my answer is I love the pre s4 cars becuase my father always had them and I always wanted a garge queen example that I will pretty muc hcollect for myself not for resale purposes
sellers email:
"I have all paperwork since the car was purchased new in May 0f '84. I also have the original window sticker. What repairs have been done were done by the dealer. I have all records. I change the oil each spring myself. Antifreeze has been changed a a few times, most recently about 2 years ago with DexCool. Brake fluid has been flushed and changed by the dealer a a few times. AC came out of storage last season not working. Dealer repaired and intalled Porsche R134 conversion kit. Car has never ben damaged. Body side moulding on one side is separated from body in a couple of spots due to glue strip problem. This occurred when car was new, was fixed under warrenty, and happened again after warrenty expired. Recommended repair was to replace moulding. I would rather have original flaw than a repair so it has been left. Paint is completely original and nearly flawless. No door dings, no noticible stone dings even on bottom panels, no fading. Car has never been left uncovered in the sun. Interior is perfect with no shrunk panels. Original blaupunkt radio is in a box somewhere. A Sony CD receiver is installed. Replacement speakers and amp are in factory locations and look original. Car was not hacked. Aftermarket alarm is installed. Original wheels and tires are in my cellar (with original weights from Zuffenhausen). Polished original style wheels with P Zero's are on the car. First/Second synchros are a little balky. Th Red line fluid seems to be helping but first/second shifts must be gentle. Pad under hood looks fine but is a little dry. Replacement might be advisable while parts are available. This could be the finet '84 928S anywhere. It really is that good. My price reflects the superb condition of the car and the situation with the synchros. The synchro problem might clear with more driving. I only put about 500 miles a year on the car now"
How big of a deal is the synchro problem? Major issue? The Sellers says he has been quoted $2-3k and that is a main reason he is seller the car

Changing synros is basically rebuilding the transmission it comes all apart but few parts should be needed $ 2-3 thousand is realistic if you pay to have it done .

$16,000 sounds pretty high to me. If the syncros are gone after only 10,000 miles, well something is most certainly up there. If the car was maintained and driven properly, the syncros would still be good after that amount of driving.
No super fluid will cure the 928 syncro issues. Been there, done that, dropped $2,000 to have it gone through.
Remember, it is only worth what someone will pay for it.
Look at it this way, you might be able to find a car with 60,000 miles with no syncro problems and in as good or close to as good of condition for probably half that kind of coin. Mileage has never scared me away. I bolted the MTM stage 3 turbo upgrade on my Audi S4 with 186,000 miles on the clock. No issues thus far and I am pushing 204,000 miles.

Wow, $16K?!?! My 83 has bad synchros, but that's pushing 125,000 miles. I would not think the synchro would wear that much with just that milage, regardless of age.
For that much I'd be looking for an 86.5 5-speed.

My 83 has "worn" syncros too.
I'm pushing 126,000 miles myself. I can still get it into second and first gear with a bit of double clutching...
Can't see how it could be worn in only 10,000.
Something is fishy there.

If you're looking for a prisitine garage queen as you say, I'd wager that you could search for years and never find another in this condition. The seller seems to be very forthcoming and knowledgeable.
Possibly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It's going to come down to how much is it worth to you?
