Rear Ended by a Pontiac Sunfire
They say timing is everything.
I am going to pick up the '91 GT tomorrow. Well, tonight on the way home I get rear ended in the '90 S4 by a Pontiac Sunfire. She must have hit me pretty hard since her air bags went off, her windshield is shattered, and at least the rad was punctured judging by the huge amounts of steam/smoke. It didn't really feel that bad from my seat.
Mine appears to have all of the damage isolated to whatever is under the rear bumper cover, which was pushed in but mostly down. I could not see any signs on the rear side fenders and the hatchback is operating without any problems. Rear tailights were not even scratched, although they have adjusted their position to the newly shaped rear end.
She has no insurance and was driving on an expired tag. Swell, here come the insuance hassles. Anyway, I drove the vehicle home no problems after the police officer on the scene confirmed that she was 100% at fault.
She was severly shaken up with air bag burns and she hit her head on something and will have a big bruise. She calmed down and was given the ok by the paramedics. When I drove off, they were waiting for the tow truck to take hers away.

At least you are ok. I think this is a sign to put the toys up for the winter. Your only problem is that you really don't have a winter to justify putting the toys up.
Good luck

My God
This isn't Friday the 13th is it? I think I'll let the garage queen hang out inside for a few days just to be safe. Seems like it isn't a fit night to be out in a shark!

I think anyone involved in a collison that cannot prove they are insured should forfeit their car and the priviledge to drive a car after they get out of jail.

Agreed.
It would also be nice if (at least in my state, ;-)) there was a computerized state data base, updated monthly, of at least minimal legal insurance. If you where pulled over, w/o insurance, the current Texas laws would take care of you whent he officer ran your DL# through the computer. The system already gets outstanding warants, suspensions, and the like.
You'd be suprised how many people get insurance, get the pay montly option, and then pay only the first month. After the first month, the insurance company drops them, but the state, and the officers on the road don't know. Result, no tickets, no suspensions, no nothing.
My famly has had no less than 3 wrecks with in the last year, all with uninsured motorests, all the other guys fault. I've had one myself about 2 years ago. Forchantly, he payed up.

Thank God for the uninsured motorist clause.
Unfortunately, your insurer will probably still raise your rates $10 -$15.00 a month.
They still assume it takes two to Tango.
Bummer.
Check your suspension and trans. mount to see if anything was dislocated.

I work in the insurance buisness. My grandfather is a Farmers agent, I plan on becoming an agent soon. The worst thing you can ever do is not buy the uninsured motorist!!! In New Mexico if you buy for one car it counts on all cars but it texas you have to have it on all of your cars to be coverd. And about people paying and keeping thier card? Yea they buy for 6 months pay close to half of what it would cost and they just keep that damn card. Then there are all the scams, its worse than most people think it is about people not having insurance.

Just to stir the pot a bit, I will first state that I do have insurance and will keep it as long as it is required by the government.
But..... in my humble opinion, it is one of the largest scams in the US today. I have NEVER made a claim, been in an accident as a driver, or had any use for automobile insurance, yet my premiums continue to esclate. (I have one speeding ticket on my record) Can anyone give me a good reason why your insurance should go up with the receipt of a non-accident moving violation? I know of many unsafe drivers that never exceed the speed limit. Lack of attention is the cause of the majority of accidents, not speed. Why would a responsible single (older) man be required to pay more than a married one? And why more for a Porsche than a sedan? I would think that Porsche drivers (928 especially) drive with a touch more care than the average joe in a easily replacable generic sedan.
I think that something required by the government should be regulated by and funded by the same. As I do not have a stellar credit rating (I haven't financed anything at all in 15 years) I am refused by the larger insurance companies, all because I can and do pay cash for all my purchases. I pay $140 a month for full coverage for my 86.5, and for what? My only concern is if I should injure someone else or their vehicle. My track record indicates that this is very unlikely. I am 39 years old and have been driving legally for 25 years. (Idaho allowed drivers license's at 14!) I can safely say that with work and play that I drive a conservative 40/50k miles a year. If you care to add it all up, I have paid one hell of a lot of insurance in and never made a claim of any sort, (Not even a windshield!) yet my rates continue to go up. Liability alone is $50 a month for the same car.
I will once again state that as long as it is required by the government, I will have insurance. And I will have the right to complain about it the whole way. This is once again only my humble opinion and not intended to flame anyone, just my rant. Boy, I do feel better now, think I'll go for a drive.

The reason its higher on a porsche than a sedan is simple. Parts for a porsche cost more than parts for a tarus! Also insuance in regulated by the government.

That shouldn't matter for liability.
I'm just as likely to hit a Porsche in my good old Ford POS as I am in my nice Red Porsceh 928. Heck, I'm just as likely to hit any other type of car! Simple numbers tell me that I'm most likely to hit a Ford pick up, because thats the probably the most common single vehical in my part of the country.
Liability should have practicly nothing to do with the cost of fixing your car, and everything to do with how likely you are to get into dammageing accidents. It would seem that people with more expensive/rarer cars would take better care of them, watch out for their cars better, and thus be less likely to smash up their pride and joy. Thus, the insurance company is less likely to have to pay for fixing somebodys car, and consiquincly, they can lower the rate.
Instead, insurance companys decided that the additional preformace of our cars means that we're more likely to ride the bleeding edge, and smash up other peoples cars. Apparently they even have reacherch data that shows this. You can't win for loseing with an insurance company.

Update.
I received a call from the Sunfire lady this weekend, the one with no insurance. Apparently, her father wants to pay for everything.
Wait until he finds out it is a Porsche! I will be happy to get $500 out of him to cover the deductible. After that, I will have it fixed under insurance and then let Geico go after her/him to get their money back.
The estimate will be Tuesday. I will let you know how it turns out.

a reminder that uninsured motorist coverage only pays your medical bills so long as the other person is un, or underinsured, and has insufficient liability coverage to pay. it does not cover property damage to your car caused by some uninsured idiot mullethead. your collision coverage would pick that up. now, as to declining UM coverage, the bet is that you will not ever receive serious medical injuries. in a car like this, that's a safe bet. now save the $50/year.
