What's the real story here?
Couple of thing's...In researching the productions numbers of 93 thru 95 GTS, I’m finding discrepancies in total numbers of 95’s produced. (I’ve read the article in current excellence about #’s) It’s now my understanding the last 928 built (the green thing) was for a gentlemen working at a Porsche dealership who upon realizing it was NOT the last built refused personal/dealership delivery of the auto and Porsche ended up keeping the auto to sell themselves. The story continues with an additional 20 cars or so built bringing the total 95 #’s to around 110. I’m about to place an offer on a 95 GTS auto w/26k in close to pristine condition, asking price $45K.
Per-inspection comes fairly clean. All service records, T-belt replaced, new front brake pads/rotors, new tires, interior spotless, however, two small spots of lifting/bubbling paint…corrosion maybe? Battery tray shows corrosion. ONE DME and two alarm system faults were stored/read cleared: knock sensor 1, implausible drive position & luggage compartment open when alarm was activated. ALSO, pre-inspection observed a vibration/rattle under vehicle upon acceleration at 1500 rpm.
So, what do you fellow 928’s think about condition/price & is it one of only 90 built?
Need help, loosing sleep!

Dear Tim,
Cannot help with the price except to say by Swiss standards it is too high. The rust/corrosion would also be a source of worry.
However the main reason for my reply. Having some experience myself in researching numbers of Porsches built, you will never really ever know. You can ask the factory and they will tell you, they do not even really know. They may have allocated say 1000 VINs but only built 300. 90 VINs and built 100. The 10 extra get a new VIN range. Happens all the time. The only comfort you can take is that the 928 GTS was in production scales a rare beastie. I have a collegue in England who owns a 1995 GTS, it has featured on this forum under the thread "Clear Lights". Very nice machine, pity about the automatic.
Ciao,

PS: Another area which causes confusion is the Porsches built in either Spezial Werks or Weissach. The production people often do not include them in the data yet they are genuine Porsche production. This happened with the Turbo 3.6s and still to this day causes mass confusion. Nobody really knows how many Turbo 3.6 "S"s or Flachbaus were built. Range is from 63 to 90.

Tim,
On a Porsche that new, the bubbling paint is probably from an accident and the subsequent respray. The paint will often bubble if paint is not properly stripped before repainting. I suffered the same problem when I had my 928 repainted. The guy has repainted the car two times and is about to repaint it again due to bad surface prep.
On the other hand, the 928's are known for rusting at the base of the rear side windows.

Thanks all,
I’d have to agree with Adrian, we’d probably never really know the true #’s built but I’m guessing around 110 or so. As for the paint, it’s lifting on the gas filler door and one small spot on the driver’s window post. Carfax shows the car as clean-no accidents and has lived on a Hawaiian Island since new so that’s where my concern for corrosion comes in. Pre-inspection mechanic believes it to be a Porsche paint problem with no previous signs of body damage showing.
My little voice says $41K would be a little more reasonable price and the 10yr corrosion warranty should cover the paint spots.

I'd say, Buy it. I was second in line for my Crystal Emerald Metallic 5sp with dark rootwood, which the seller didn't know was a cool option. I just kept telling myself, If the first person doesn't or can't buy it. It's mine, sight unseen. I didn't know mine was a custom color until I tried to buy touch up paint and Amazon green was a little too dark. What made me think Amazon was when I picked it up from the warehouse the floresent lights made it look blue. It's a 96 Benz color.

Be very careful of rust appearing around the gas filler, If it has got to the stage that it is showing on the paint surface it may be very deep into the metal underneath.
I am just about to replace a rear fender (at a high cost. Check out replacement part costs. about $1000 for the basic panel) on my car that was showing similar rust spots.
Cheers
