Ok experts, I need some clues here. I am, admittidly, a rank amateur in this arena. I have purchased a car. It is a 928. But there are a lot of conflicting pieces of information. The more I dig the wierder it gets.
*Title is for an 81 Porsche 928.
*Owners manual, in German, is for an 81 928S.
*Vehicle ID plate, where the GVWR is listed, in the door frame says it was manufactured in November of 84.
*It has the Euro tail light and German labelling inside on all surfaces, and all warning lights.
So how can I differentiate this car from other models/years. Any clues in the engine area? S4 is positively ruled out, I'm not that dense, and its not a 911, but as for which 928 and which year, thats something I could use some tips on, I can post a few pics if necessary.
If the vin helps you its WP0ZZZ92ZBS841301 according to the id plate and title. Guessing by the vin code it looks like an 84 here also. (841301)
Check the engine number. A Euro S will have an M28/ 11 or M28/12. THe number is located on top of a flat boss towards the front passenger side of the motor.
The plate that states 1984 be an import plate. The VIN looks like an 81.
Euro cars are always fun when trying to figure out their history
The VIN tells the tale;
What you've got is a 1981 Euro S model.
As John stated the '84 date is most likely
the importer's tag, my '83 Euro has one with
an '84 date .
There should also be a VIN plate underhood
by the hood latch-US cars don't have this.
Post some pics!
Another Euro version joins the fold. Cool. The Euro versions are great and it sounds like yours wasn't too heavily altered when it was imported. As the other posters correctly state, you have a 1981 928S, European version. It's all in the VIN:
WP0ZZZ92ZBS841301
WPOZZZ = Manufacturer code for a Euro version Porsche (Audi is WAUZZZ, Volkswagen is WVWZZZ). The ZZZ are replaced by specific letters in US-version VINs.
92 = First two digits of model designation
Z = Another "check" or place holder for a character that exists in a US-VIN.
B = Year code where A=1980, B=1981, C=1982 etc. Some letters are skipped if they look like numbers. G for example.
S = Ehhhh, I forget actually...
8 = Last digit of model designation
41301 = Your car's serial number.
Post some pics anyway though. The "84" in the VIN is a total conincidence in this case, by the way.
Another thing you may want to do is get a cardex (certificate of authenticity) from PCNA. That would let you know the original factort specs, production date, MSRP, options etc. There is an ad for it in the December Excellence, which also has a 928 buyer's guide.
I have a 79 and can't find any option codes on the car...I would like to get an cardex from pcna but don't know how...Could someone tell me how I go about doing this....
Thanks
Porsche Cars or North America offers a certificate of authenticity program, but I doubt they would do this for Euro models. Call 770-290-3642 or email ccannon@porschecars.com for more information.
I e-mailed the person that Nicole gave for info and they told me depending on year that the cost is $ 35.00 . They e-mailed me a form ...The older the car is the more it costs ..
