Post WAAAATTS UP!

Whats the scoop on upgrading lights in the 928. I have the standard s4 lights..9004 65/45 watts. Ive seen 100watt 9004s (928intl)...I assume there isnt a problem using these?

What is the wattage on the FOGLIGHTS, the inboards?

What about the "flasher/highbeams" ..ie: the outboard lights

Ive seen a set of 100w H3's at Pep Boys which is the type bulb in the foglight. In conjunction with the 100w headlights i could compete with the light on the LUXOR in town

thnks

I've had the same questions. Greg (gbyron here) has been illuminating on this subject. Perhaps he'll drop in and share his insights.

(Clever title for this topic BTW)

Jim B at Intl. said that the headlights will handle the 100W but the fog lights will get pretty hot with a similar wattage.

Hi Tony & the group--

I have the 80/100 H5 (9004) bulbs in the headlights, and they do make a pretty good difference. Only problem has been melted sockets where they plug into the base of the bulb. Replacement sockets are available in the fixit stuff section of Pep Boys, and after a couple episodes I decided to add quick-disconnects to the wiring and carry spares... Of course, no problems since so I still have my spares.

On the fogs/aux main beams:
The 100w H3 bulbs work fine. Be sure to get name brand bulbs off the rack, and not the ones in the "night blaster" packaging and such. Best luck on these so far has been with GE brand bulbs off-the-shelf at Wal-Mart, with no excessive failures. I drive with the fog lights on all the time in the daylight hours, sort of a por-man's daytime running lights.

Also noticed the hard way that the new lower lenses and reflectors I used to replace the ones cracked by rocks manage to project a whole lot more light down the road than the old ones. I did add the plastic shields to the new ones as insurance, after the cost of the pair of replacement fog/aux main lenses knocked me to the floor the first time.

All in all, these are simple, inexpensive, and effective improvements.

While I'd love to have a set of the Euro 8" H-4's, the brighter 9004 bulbs will do me fine for a good while, unless I see a set somewhere for a bit less than the $500/pr commonly quoted. I let a set get by on E-bay a few months ago, sold for about $325. In hindsight they might have been a good investment for me, then letting my as-new H-5's go to an S-car owner looking for an upgrade from the 7"/chrome ring setup.

Go for it!

Hey Dr. B. I could not find these for the life of me, and I checked Pep Boys and all the other chain autoparts stores. I am upgrading my '83 with S4 lighting and the connectors are of course different.

But right now I have rigged up these three female spade connectors in line, which is cheesy. Now I've got to cover the whole mess with massive heat-shrink tubing to protect the connection from the weather and carwashes.

I don't like the way this mod is going - it's definitely not (yet) in the "do it like ya mean it" league. Do you have any other ideas for sources for the sockets? I suppose any wrecked modern car will have a pair I can cut off...but I'd rather just buy a couple.

Like I said, I found mine at the local (Anaheim) Pep Boys store last. They also have them at the Kragen store near my OC house, the store in Hawaiian Gardens, at least they did a year ago when I did the last melted-socket swap.

I still have a pair of spares that live in my toolbox, outfitted with little bullet disconnects that match ones I added to the wiring on the car. Also have spare bullets, so we have a fall-back if we can't find the right parts easily.

I'm in Texas for another week or so I think, hopefully I'll be home in time for Christmas. If you can't find the right stuff before then, I'll either grab some down in OC or just hand you the ones I have as spares.

Unfortunately they are at the Cypress house or I'd have you pick them up from Karen right away.

See you guys in a couple weeks. Watch for me on TV when you watch the Rose Parade, too. ;-)

Cheers!

I visited two Pep Boys and two Kragens up here (plus many, many other places) and no go.

If you could pick me up a new pair the next time you need to wander into one of those stores, I'd appreciate it. No rush at all, certainly. For now, the lights are in and it's aiming time! Yeeha! I love the look.

Both of my old 7" sealed beams were pretty badly rusted inside, contributing to my former lighting woes.

So you're not working float logistics at Victory Park this year? Dang, I was gonna come give you a hard time, then head to the Clippers game later that day. :-) So this must mean they have you on one of those white motor scooters. Not a 928, but probably still has a good power to weight ratio.

Nah, no scooter duty for me. I will be dispatching, and doing timing tests to make sure nobody's float decides to park in front of the cameras (big fine) and also do the sound pressure testing (big fine) ifthe music exceeds about 116 dBa at the curb. Should be stationed in front of the Elks Lodge on Colorado, far right of your screen on new years morning.

See you in a week or so.
