You're welcome. Carl likes it and is going for the near-CS look with no bumpertits and no rear wiper.

That also makes me think about going all out and making the sides clean, no door handles or lock cylinders.
If you like it then go for it. It would certainly be unique. For me it'd be a little too resto-moddy looking - but I'm kind of a 928 purist and will be keeping side markers. In fact I think S4s look better with the rub strips while GTSs look better without. Obviously I'm deranged.

I think it would look great, BUT you just know that at some point you are going to have to break a window to get into the damn thing when something fails.
As long as the hatch lock works you can always crawl in ...

You ever get over to CFOT any more?
Haven't been there in a while. The Z is like a Timex - just keeps ticking and ticking.

My other ride got tagged in the rear and I just got it back.
Eek. How bad?

Nothin' specific. I just shoulda done 5 years ago what you did minutes after gettng yours: take the whole damn thing apart and put it back together. Instead I (mostly) went about fixing one thing at a time. Every time I get near it I find something else that makes me want to put the POs in a line and pistol whip them. (Last find was the tank filler neck drain tube routed through the rear tow eye. WTF?) I did drive it to the Frenzy and it was fine. Except for the new GTS filler neck that leaked from its seams. A bit of clunking from the suspension and a persistent RMS leak. (That last may turn into a real thread at some point.) I just cannot get ahead...

Looks like you've already done away with the front bumperettes?

I guess I did kind of jump into the deep end on this one, the list of things we did before is way long, but it should be very close to getting the major stuff out of the way after this round.

I am going to go talk to the paint guy this morning, he has just got a 82 SE Corvette that I know I am going to be working on as soon as the paint is done on it. (yea, it is closer to being done than mine is) and look at what it will take to get rid of the bumper ****, my guess is a new bumper cover. If so, they will be staying for right now.

You and your wife have had good luck with the Z, I know you drive the crap out of it.
This is not the right forum to be saying good things about them, but they are good cars.

I had all of the usual problems, TT, wheel bearings, brakes, timing belt and W/P, leaks from one end to the other, we had the TT out of the car 3 times, then a few days later the rear main started leaking. I have the factory tool for the rear main if you need it, after getting the tool I think a piece of pipe would work as well.

The biggest hurdle for me anyway, is the inside of the car, I have a feeling that it will make the rest of this look cheap.

I had a lady tag the Corvette in a parking lot, I was not in the car, but it did several thousand dollars worth of damage to it, and the Chevelle is out of service right now so I was SOL for a while.

Just a couple of more things on removing the side marker lights.

One, what are the chances of getting a ticket for them not being on there?

Two, what kind of Aluminum and thickness to use to fill the hole and anybody got a source on it?

Greg,

I hate parking lots. You need a '73 Chevy pickup for parking lots

I was concerned about this when Carl had his removed. I wouldn't be too worried about getting a ticket unless you happen to get stopped by a 928-savy patrolman with an axe to grind.. I'd be more worried about failing inspection?

I think I have the inspections covered.

I Called one of my long time cop buddy's, (he is a watch commander) he said "Only a **** **** like you would worry about getting a citation for no marker lights"

I think I need to start a new thread about what to use as a filler plate for the front fenders and what rod to use to weld it in.

Hi Greg, it's great to hear from you. If you were closer you could stop by and pick up some aluminum scraps. I've been using .050 and .060 strips to fill in stuff like wiper and antenna holes, I epoxy them in and slap some Dolphin Glaze on. My welder did some welding on my fender but I don't know if it was anything special, they used whatever filler rod was lying nearby and it seemed to be nicely weldable. The reason was to fix the tear from hammering the lip. It's a good time to hammer those fender lips but I went ape and really flailed away to get as much clearance as possible but a gentle flattening should be fine.

Hi Mike

We used some kind of hi-tech body glue on the holes for the rub strips.

Where in Atlanta are you located?

There are so many types of Al and I have never seen any body say for sure what material that the fenders are made of. If I knew what it was made of and the thickness to use, I could get sheet metal, but if you have a bit laying around it would be worth my time to drive to you to and see what you are using.

They are doing the wheel wells while they have it.

I have done several ground up restorations, but this one is by far, the most complex of any that I have done yet.

Greg, I'm in Lawrenceville near hwy 316 & 20. My shop's 5 miles south of the Mall of Georgia, stop by if you're ever in the hood. There's another Atlanta guy who filled in marker lights, here are some more ideas if your paint guy gets bored: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/343969-paint-a-928-racer-step-by-step-lots-of-pictures.html

Thanks Mike.

I think my paint guy would shoot me if I brought him some pics like that.
