Rear Suspension Questions
Greetings
I recenlty purchased my first 928 a few months ago. It's a 1986.5. The first thing I did was take it to the shop with a laudry list. The mechanic stated that both the rear cv joints/boots needed to be replaced. They were installed. Now I get a thumping noise. It is exsecially noticable when turning. Any thoughts?
Also, would a 1991 rear suspension fit on an 1986.5? I have access to one in my area.
Thanks!

Do we assume the car did not make the noise previous to the CV joint changes?
If not, back to the shop it goes............can you determine which side the thumping's from?
Perhaps have someone drive the car while your in the rear listening.

It didnt make a sound before the CV joints were replaced. The noise is coming from the drivers side rear end. It's very loud, exspecially when going around corners.
The vechicle is back to the shop as we speak. I was hoping for ideas before the mechanic gives me his...and a bill

How many mile are on this car? I do work with the company that made these for Porsche (GKN ) and was told that they should be good for at least 150 175 k if the boots are maintained. Put down a very detailed list of what it was doing before you replaced them and after and I will have a engineer from the company let me know what he thinks.

Lots of developments on this issue today.
The first trip to the shop was for suspension and brake work. Nothing really major..replaced boots, cv joints, ball joints..etc. The boots were ripped in the front and back. The owner of the shop took the car out and now states the axels need to be replaced. He informed me that he fired the mechanic that work on the car for sub quality work. He stated that if I get the parts, he will install for free.
Yes the owner is very honest and has had my business for 15 years. He doesnt want to lose me as a customer. Smart move.
I have a rear end in mind thats off a 1991 928. I'm thinking of buying it.
Thanks for all your input. I will let you know how this turns out.

Why, am I missing something? Is it really cheap? I don't think there are any improvements, unless the axles got thicker but you don't need anything more than what you have. If for the same money, or close, you can rebuild what you have, you will be better off (rebuilt vs. used).

Open the hatch and try pushing down on the car to cause it to rebound and see if you can reproduce the thumping noise. It'll be easier to trace without the engine or road noise.
Also check the 3 bolts on rear shock towers. If they're not tight enough, they will cause play, and therefore thumping noise
