Anyone ever heard of this happening with a 928?

I could find no posts of it revealed on a search, here.

I'm fearing the genesis of another bit of 928 urban legend.........

Not sure if this failure is frequent on the 928 but using the park brake while releaving the tension of the drive system ensures minimizing the possibility.

Also, drum brake shoes costs much much less than an auto tranny rebuild.

Is this parking pawl also a problem in five speeds, or only automatics?

I usually avoid using the parking brake because of past non-p-cars I have owned where the darn thing would freeze solid on me in cold weather, leaving me stranded for hours while I ran the motor and waited for it to thaw out. Since then, I have made a habit of putting any manual I drive into whatever gear I will need to pull out of my parking spot later, then parking it in gear. My current 5 speed does roll a a few inches once parked when I'm on an incline, and it will get stuck in whatever gear I parked in, which is bad if I need to be going in the opposite direction to get out of my spot.

Do I need to rethink this?

You wont have this problem on a 5 speed - its unique to autos.

However I never leave my car in gear unless I am on a major incline... just personal preference - of course It never freezes here either... I do always use the handbrake.

If you are going to leave it in gear for effective braking you should really use 1st or reverse - I think thats what you meant right?

Leslie...........Alan is correct for the pawl but you should be aware that if you park on a substantial incline the weight moment of the car may over come the compression of the engine and she'll roll away if left in a low ratio gear.

Pointing up hill leave it in first or reverse when pointing down and use the hand brake before you release the clutch thus the car is parked and held by the brakes as it was designed not the transmission/driveline.

Looks like the gear has 9 teeth and the ratchet engages one of them....so each tooth is about 40 degrees of a circle .... the average tire circumference is about 6.3 feet so 1/9 th of 6.3 feet is .7 feet or 8.4 Inches. So it just depends on how far away from a tooth you happen to stop...but 8 inches or so is about it plus a little drive line slop

Malcolm - I do the reverse of this (though its actually always held by the parking brake). So parked pointing downhill I put it in 1st and uphill into reverse. My rationale was that any movement should not counter rotate the engine...

Not that I expect it to happen...?

I do only use first and reverse for parking, yes. But I don't go by the incline (downhill or uphill), I go strictly by what gear I will need to leave in. For instance, my driveway has a fairly steep incline. If I pull in nose first, I will need to be in reverse to pull back out, so I park in reverse, which is now heading in the direction of my incline. After I turn off the car and release my foot off the brakes, it rolls back a few inches. If I do NOT put it in reverse before I park, I will be stuck in first gear after it rolls back, and then will have to pull forward a little bit to free up my shifter. This isn't always possible, depending on how close I am to the garage door.

This will mean I can't ever pull out of a parellel parking spot, if there are people in front of and behind me. Here's hoping my parking brake doesn't freeze this winter!

That answers my question.

My parking brake only freezes in place when it is left on for a long period of time, and then leave the handle down, use the engine to move the car forwards and backwards, you will hear abit of a pop and it will be free.

I know a local guy who snapped off his parking pawl a day or two after having his tranny rebuilt. Listen to the good advice above about not stressing it...

This condition is common in many Mercedes Benz vehicles, consider it normal. The parking pawl and gear are made of metal; the plastic refereed to, is the pawl engagement rod guide, I can’t remember seeing one broken. The below PDF Is from MB new 7 Speed transmission, which uses a similar parking system

Chaadster take a chill pill. When people search through the forums you never know what info they maybe looking for and it may be of some value no matter how off of topic it may be
