Default DE's, autox, track days, racing: minimum helmet clearance?

Hey guys,

I'm trying to figure out how much headroom/helmet clearance I am going to need in order to run my 928 on the track?

I'm talking about DE's, autox, track days, but probably not racing.

I did a quick search, but can't find any real info on how much room there needs to be between the top of my helmet, and the inner roof of the car.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Ed

ps: here's my related thread on headroom in 928s: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/386715-difference-between-sunroof-and-sunroof-delete-headroom.html

My helmet use to hit the headliner a bit on the GT when I use to use it for DE.
Seating position is not the greatest for a 6'+ person in an S4 with a sunroof!

I am not aware of any written requirements on this. There is little concern at non-racing venues for hard top cars. I have heard of people with converibles that have roll bars adjusting their seat position so that they meet the broomstick rule during tech, but move the seat into a more driveable position to drive. Naughty naughty, but they just don't check for these things as you wheel off onto the track.

I have had to adjust my seat position a bit because it is a little annoying to have the helmet hit the roof. I probably have 1/2 inch of clearance, nobody has ever measured, or seem to care about this.

For open top cars, there is usually a 2" requirement, but I don't think there is a requirement for a hard top.

Ok, thanks for the input guys. Sounds like it hasn't been an issue for you guys so far. Right now, with the Sparco seat with sliders, I can just fit my helmet on, and have about 1/2" clearance.

I think if I get a side mount racing seat, and used the fixed mount brackets, I can gain another 1/2 - 1". That would get me in a comfortable position, with about 1" - 1.5" clearance with the helmet on.

I'm planning on inquiring with the local track event folks (DE, auto x, track days, etc) and I'll see what they say and report back in case anyone is interested.

I'd really like to be able to find a seat setup that will allow me to run some track days with my S4. I really want to get out on the track, but if I can't do it with the S4, I may have to sell it for a sunroof delete 928, which I really don't want to do.

I'm about 6'2". I have Momo fiberglass shells with side mounts and like you it's low in the back and high in the front. I haven't tried sitting in it with a helmet, but I'm only about 1.5" from the headliner now (rough guess using fingers to measure). I'm going to have custom side brackets made to drop the seat as far as possible. Unfortunately even with a narrow seat, it is too wide to go between the factory floor brackets. I'm not yet ready to cut out the factory brackets.

Edited to add: Mine are currently bolted in with Momo brackets and no sliders.
