You may want to search other threads here. This link below is Porken's 32v'r manual and pics, but I'm sure you have a similar notch on back of your 16V cam cover.
http://liftbars.com/docs/32Vr_V1.pdf

As he said, set crank to TDC, notch on front of cam needs to be aligned with notch on back of cam cover near block. You can eyeball it. His tool takes the guesswork out and you can set it w/i a degree to the where you want the timing.

JP,

That's my (new 86.5). The wheels are silver. I don't think I'll go all white, but I'm going to buy clear signals, clear side markers, and a nickel plated emblem soon.

Did you paint the grills, too? The early cars were factory painted.
...

Steve,

16V gears are not adjustable (although, sometimes the keyway is loose enough that you can move it a little). The pics at the top of the thread show the 16V reference marks. The 1-4 side has a cast raised nub on the rear cover, and the 5-8 has an extension off of the distributor tower, both at ~11:00.

That is VERY good news.

Some people are just lucky.

You are VERY lucky you didnt break that cam, only due to noticing the noise and catching it quickly! Well Done!
I would check the other cam asap as well.

I already checked the other cam.....it was tight. Good idea though I still think the passenger side cam is off a tooth.....how much of a problem is that for now....

Later in the winter I am going to delete the air pump and convert to an electric fan. I am also having an exhaust done.

It is VERY common for a 16V to have the lhs (car's lh) cam retarded nearly a tooth - when timing after a belt change, book says to retard until wheel fits into belt teeth neatly. This is why you need Porken's timing kit, so you can get things exactly right. IIRC, his experiences were that they run smoother exactly timed, and bottom end is much better with timing advanced 2-3 degrees.

This maybe off topic, but can a round tooth timing belt be replaced with a square tooth timing belt. Myself I dont think so, but it would be nice to know from people who have done this before.

Glenn

We have seen belt profiles mixed up they run that way but it is way wrong. You could change all the sprockets to round or square if you wished , the round is considered the high torque style belt.

G'day Jim,
I thought so. Having just purchased a new belt myself and finding that it came as the square tooth model. I did explain to the supplier that my car looks like a rounded tooth belt (not sure if thats standard or someone has upgraded my engine before me). Looks like I'll be returning it for the round teeth.
My car is '81 928 4.5l Auto

Thats interesting. Definately looks like the round tooth setup is on the engine. The new belt (square) looks way different.
Anyway will check all gears and see what the crank/oil pump look like. Thanks for the advice Jim.
Regards,
Glenn.
