Default 87 S4 5 spd project for sale - UPDATE - IT WAS THE ECU!!!

I give up! I've been trying for about four months now (on weekends) to get this car to run properly. It will start up when cold, but then once it's warm it dies and won't refire. It's not the temp II sensor, not the ground points, not the battery, the ISV spraying didn't do the trick, it's not a lot of things... I honestly don't have time to mess with it any more and it needs to get off my brother's lot at his shop (Gaithersburg, MD) ASAP.

So here's some specs... 87 S4, 5 spd, 181,512 miles. Red with black interior; front seats replaced with lightweight Cobra racing seats (adjustable back; very comfy and nice looking seats, 5 pt harness-ready) Momo wheel & shift ****. The exterior is a little rough, with two good dings: driver's front fender and rear bumper. Otherwise nice and straight; paint is decent, but obviously could use a wax/buff. I was going to do that once I got it going, but I can't, so I won't. This car would make an awesome restoration project or an even more amazing track car.

Ideally I'd like $6k for it (about what I have in it), but I'm open to offers. As a result of the ECU fix solution, this $6k price is for Rennlist members only. It (still) needs to go. Note: it does not come with the wheels shown in the pictures. It currently has stock 16" dish wheels on it. The exhaust is now back to stock.

UPDATE: Well don't I feel like a horse's pahtoot. (Not sure if that's how you spell it, but anyway...) we swapped ECUs from my 88 into the 87 this AM and voila, problem solved. Runs like a CHAMP now.

Default Try cleaning the relays

I had a similar issue on my 88 S4, that almost drove me crazy. Turned out that cleaning the relay contacts in question (LH relay and fuel pump relay) solved the issue, apparently some oxidation causes a higher resistance when hot. To diagnose, wait until it dies, switch off ignition and rock the relays a little in their sockets, then try to restart. Good luck!

Thats my thought on the money as well. Sadly with the body condition and the non-stock interior. Its going to be tough. Maybe I say Maybe, if you take the time to post some info like compression numbers and crank end play and give more detail to no start condition. It is a 5 -speed so it does have that going for it. But then the almost 200,000 miles..... Hmmmmmm....

If you really cared, 4 months of weekends is not alot, find a new spot to work, roll up sleeves, dive in thoroughly, plus, there's good help in MD ...you'll get good results...finally enjoy...typical 928 scenario. Doggone it, I want those seats and steering wheel--parts car..just kidding, work at it and stop whineing she's worth it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think thrust bearing failure is a condition only seen in automatic transmissions.

With all due respect, 4 months of weekends is more than I can spare. I work 50+ hrs during the week, and I want to focus on my other projects, including my 88. Plus my wife would appreciate me being around to help fix up/maintain our 80+ year old house. Please feel free to dive in at my expense.

Sounds like a reasonable deal to me. A little trouble shooting and bingo, nice DE or Track prospect. That ding in the rear cover will probably come right out with a good hair blower treatment.

Mike,

OldTee just sold his 928. Maybe he can help you find a buyer. If he can sell a 928 with red wheels, he must know a lot of people.

Thanks John. I've received several PMs about the car, but no one's jumped on it yet.

A simple fix I've not yet tried is swapping LH computers between the 88 and 87. I always thought autos had different computers, though (only because they're different in Saab LH cars).

There is no difference between the automatic and manual LH. There is a slight difference between the '87 and '88 as evidenced by the different part numbers, but they will swap without issue.

+1 If it's thrust bearing failure it will be the first 5-spd I've ever heard of.

If the compression numbers are consistent that would be a heck of a deal.
